This workshop will emphasize mindful attention to the body and breathing as
the foundation for cultivating awareness and insight into the deeper nature
of our body and mental processes. Slow deep breathing coordinated with
mindful bending and stretching exercises are done to help this process.
Periods of sitting, standing and walking will aid in cultivating a
continuity of awareness of the present moment. The goal of mindfulness/
insight practice is to become aware of our intentions which precede activity
of body, speech, and thought in order to transform harmful habits which
bring suffering into wholesome ones which conduce to peace, happiness, and
wisdom. The Buddha’s teachings of the Four Noble Truths inform the practice
. How to carry this practice into daily live is given importance.
This retreat is suitable for beginners as well as experienced meditators.
There will be Dharma talks, chance for Q & A, instructions, and guided
meditations.
About the Teacher:
Ven. Yogavacara Rahula was born Scott Joseph DuPrez in Southern California
in 1948. He grew up during the hippie revolution and entered the U.S. Army
for three years in 1967, spending ten months in Vietnam. In 1972 he began a
long odyssey starting in Scandinavia which took him half way around the
world to India and Nepal. In Nepal he encountered his first spiritual
teachers, Tibetan Lamas, at a month long meditation course, by the end of
which he was converted more or less to being a Buddhist. His search brought
him south to Sri Lanka where he eventually got ordained as a Buddhist monk
in 1975. Prior to ordination he had studied Yoga with Swami Gitananda in
Pondicherry, South India. He remained in Sri Lanka off and on until 1986
when he returned to the U.S.A. to visit his parents and to help spread the
Dharma. In 1987 he joined Bhante H. Gunaratana to help build up the Bhavana
Society Forest Monastery in West Virginia, USA. He travels out from time to
time to conduct meditation retreats in various parts of the world and in the
U.S.
Bhante Rahula has written four books: an autobiography entitled, One Night’
s Shelter; The Way to Peace & Happiness, a comprehensive study of the Buddha
’s Teaching; Breaking Through the Self-Delusion, a small booklet on
vipassana meditation and Traversing the Great Himalaya, a photo documentary
of a spiritual pilgrimage in the Himalaya.
