a**r 发帖数: 5444 | 1 Almost every summer, whenever I can, I would go into the mountains, camp and
hike for many days. It seems to be the best way to untether my soul and set
it free. In the mountains, trails are normally broken into three categories
physically strong, I would always choose the most strenuous trails that I
could take. I have learnt from the experience that, while the easy and
moderate trails are the most accessible and safe, I have to mingle in the
crowd and the scenery at the end is almost always mundane. It is only when I
take those strenuous trails that I am rewarded with landscapes beyond
imagination.
In Baxter State Park of Maine, near the northern end of the Appalachian
Trail, I was in awe when I saw a chain of shining lakes, like charmed
emeralds, stretching out hundreds of miles till the edge of the sky. In
Glacier National Park of Montana, when I finally climbed onto the Dawson
Pass, against the howling wind a myriad of mountain giants silently revealed
themselves, transcending me into an unspeakable world. In North Cascades of
Washington, the Hidden Lake trail took me from vast meadows filled with
wildflowers to the black mountain touching the sky and the taciturn glacier
kissed by the sun. Those trails were grueling and I almost always had to
face the terror of hiking alone in the darkness. The hike made my skin tan
and my legs burn. But they also made my heart sing and brought me memories I
hold deep inside.
Two years ago, I had to make a decision that was going to change my life.
After a long time of soul searching and thinking, I still could not make up
my mind. Then I stumbled upon a poem by Robert Frost. That poem, which
settled my struggle, is the famous “the Road Not Taken”:
“Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
……
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”
As if called upon by the poem, I took the road less travelled by. It turned
out to be the most strenuous of all. Since I embarked on this journey, I
have had to confront numerous doubts, questions, judgments and ridicules.
With my moon falling in Pisces which makes me extremely susceptible to
external influence, I have in turn doubted, questioned, judged and ridiculed
myself. It certainly does not help with the numerous detours and setbacks I
've encountered on this journey.
But I have also had other encounters. I met a single mother who fought
tirelessly for environmental justice against the death threat of the
Corporate. I met a southern woman who led a dying rural community out of
despair, changing the life course of several generations and inspiring
communities across the world. I also met a most unassuming young woman, who
I mistook as a roadside beggar when we first met and who headed the decade-
long efforts in helping thousands of children grinded in poverty and
deprivation. These people, they have all endured endless darkness, solitude
and harshness on their own journeys. But they have also shaped life on their
own terms, surrendering only to what spells love, enchantment and
possibility. When I met them, it dawned on me that I was not alone. I am
never alone.
Life is a one way journey. It can be long and winding. But there is only one
destination, the same for everyone. No matter if the road leading there is
easy, moderate or strenuous. Reaching that final destination is like
climbing onto the top of the mountain. Looking down from there, many things
would be very small, while many would not.
When I take those strenuous hikes in the mountains, I know I would be
rewarded by magnificent vistas and fascinating sceneries. But the more I
hike, the more I realize that it is not important.
Being on this strenuous trail is already the most luring reward of all. And
with this faith, I shake off misery and keep on. |

不过我觉得旅行的路和人生的路还是不一样的,人生的路有的时候有点被动
很赞文中那个 a most unassuming young woman
我觉得刻意选择什么路不是最重要的,怎么在不同的路上发现美和有意义的东西更重要!

type—I guess your delicate artworks are a little misleading on that
aspect. But having been astonished repeatedly by the various tricks
you have up your sleeves, I guess I can say nothing surprises me any

So, let's see: Baxter State Park—shining lake, Glacier National Park—
Montana sky, North Cascades National Park—hidden lake...does anybody
else see a pattern here? I can't wait to see where you go hiking next and
what new ID pops up on MITBBS right afterwards. For that matter, I'd
suggest that you stay away from the hiking trails in southern California
national parks, for I doubt Badwater or DevilsDen would sound very good
as new IDs for you. :-)
