Speaker(s)
Edward Frenkel (University of California, Berkeley)
Description
One of the most fascinating and important developments in mathematics in the
last 50 years is the "Langlands Program", a collection of ideas that
provides a grand unification of many areas of mathematics. Frenkel's
celebrated book "Love and Math", now translated into many languages,
provides an extraordinarily accessible overview of the deep mathematics
involved. The lectures will be a great opportunity to hear the story of
these ideas from a great expositor, and participate in a discussion of them.
Covering topics from the basic ideas of symmetries and Fermat's last
theorem to the recent works connecting the Langlands Program to dualities in
quantum physics, the lectures will be accessible to undergraduate students.
Please note these lectures will be videotaped to air on a Japanese public
television station (NHK) this fall. By attending this lecture, you are
giving NHK your consent to possibly appear on this television program
without any compensation or credit.
There will be buses to MSRI leaving Evans Hall at 2:35, 2:40, 3:05 and 3:
10pm.After the lectures, buses will depart MSRI for Evans Hall at 6:20, 6:25
and 6:50pm. |
