"... imprisoned a Nobel laureate" -- Awarding the Nobel to Liu was really in
reaction to his harsh prison sentence, which took place before the award.
So the language here is misleading at best.
The gravest human rights violations in China is really not about the
imprisonment of this activists who open calls for an end to one-party rule
by the CCP. The Chinese constitution and other laws on the books actually
does not grant its citizens the right to challenge the CCP's rule of China,
so Liu's imprisonment is not illegal.
The main problem in China is the denial of rights that are actually
guaranteed under Chinese constitution. Censorship of the Internet is one
such example. Such violations of its own constitution by the Chinese
government also directly impedes the operation of many US companies in China
, and should be the focus of US protests and demands.
[Now you can question the legitimacy of a Constitution that leads to the
imprisonment of people like Liu. But that goes back to the civil war in
which the Chinese people voted overwhelmingly with their blood for the
current system. Any change will have to come slowly. BTW I think Liu
received 11 years partially for the reason so that other signatories of
Charter 08 would thus not need to be prosecuted.] | L*********d 发帖数: 7037 | 2 英文五毛在NYT网站上发的评论,不是NYT的评论。
