Eighteen years of construction on Route 22 in Westmoreland County comes to a
close on Thursday with the opening of four lanes of traffic near the
Indiana County line.
PennDOT has scheduled a celebration at 10 a.m. that day in the parking lot
of the indoor-outdoor flea market on westbound Route 22 in Derry Township,
just west of the Indiana County line and east of Jonnet Road.
With completion of a nine-phase reconstruction and widening project, Route
22 will have four lanes for the entire 73 miles from Murrysville to
Interstate 99 near Altoona.
But the going won't be completely smooth just yet -- the neighboring PennDOT
district has begun milling and resurfacing the section of Route 22 from the
Indiana County line to Route 119, and that will cause lane restrictions
through Labor Day.
Work on 25 miles in Westmoreland County began in 1993. The final 2.5-mile
section runs from Auction Barn Road to the county line.
