The victims of the fatal car accident that was reported early yesterday morn
ing were revealed to be two Chinese students who attended INTO Oregon State
University.
Fan Yu and Zhaoxuan Dong, both 21 from China, died after their vehicle, a 20
11 BMW, went off the right side of the road and crashed into a power pole, c
ausing flames to engulf both the pole and the car at around 4 a.m. Wednesday
morning, authorities say.
Neighbors reported the crash, which occurred near the intersection of Cardwe
ll Hill Drive and Mitchell Drive just west of Corvallis, to the Benton Count
y Sheriff's Office, who initiated an investigation to verify the identificat
ion of the victims.
Captain Greg Ridler from the Benton County Sheriff's office said they were a
ble to identify Yu, who was driving the vehicle when it crashed, and Dong ba
sed on circumstantial evidence found in the car and witness testimony. Polic
e are conducting further investigation but have essentially completed the in
quiry.
"The driver was going too fast, missed a turn and went off the side of the r
oad into the air, and the car hit a pole," Ridler said.
Officials have reason to believe that alcohol was a contributing factor to t
he accident.
"It is difficult to find out if they were over the legal limit of 0.08," Rid
ler said. "Our investigation indicated they had been drinking alcohol prior
to the accident."
Ridler, along with INTO-OSU operations director Amy McGowan, confirmed the p
arents of both victims have been notified in China.
"We worked with international services [at OSU] who were very helpful in con
tacting the families," Ridler said.
"There are rushed arrangements being made to get their parents here on emerg
ency visas," said Todd Simmons, Associate Vice President of University Marke
ting and Relations for OSU. "It's a really unfortunate situation."
As both Yu and Dong were involved in OSU's INTO program, residents of the In
ternational Living-Learning Center were informed about the accident by email
and a meeting was held with the students yesterday afternoon to discuss the
tragedy and campus counseling services that are available to them.
According to McGowan, the students and community of the ILLC are "doing as w
ell as can be expected." She added that it could be very hard to be away fro
m home in an unfamiliar place in this type of situation.
Students Run Xian and Yue Liu, both from China and friends to both of the vi
ctims, arrived at OSU eight months ago at the same time as Dong. Xian and Li
u said the victims were well known and popular within the international comm
unity, even after such a short time of living here.
"I was so surprised, and so sad about it because they were such good friends
," Xian said. "The parents must have been so sad, they were both so young."
Liu, who shared a class with and was especially close to Dong, said that alt
hough they hadn't spent much time together, found him to be very funny.
"I feel so terrible," Liu said. "I thought life in Corvallis was so safe, I
don't know how it happened."
Xian expressed the deepest grief for the victims' parents as they could not
have expected a phone call in the middle of the night notifying them of the
accident.
"[Their] parents received a call in the middle of the night saying ‘your so
n's dead,'" he said. "It's so sad."
McGowan hopes that as friends and family take time to mourn the loss, domest
ic students will show support and sensitivity to the situation.
"I hope people can reach out and be good support to the people suffering rig
ht now, and respect their needs," she said.
As the international and university community grieve the loss of two well-li
ked students, Liu and Xian expressed their concern for students and their sa
fety.
"Make a good example for others," Liu said. "I just want people to take care

Lots of people here in the U.S. also know Chinese, or at least the pin yin
system, which is the Roman alphabet for Chinese. Thus, we understand the
profanity that is used by you in this comment. You also said that the two
dead were your "xiong di", or buddies. However, did you know their habits of
reckless driving? If so, then you are the murder who at least partially
caused their death. As a resident of Ohio, I certainly do not want to share
my roads with these two.

First, not all dead people deserve respect or sympathy. Secondly, calling
others idiot only makes you look like a fool. If they were speeding or
driving under the influence of alcohol / drug, I would offer my tremendous
sympathy to the poor tree that was damaged during the crash. Additionally,
if you, whom I suspect to be another Chinese student of University of Dayton
, know those two dead students but do not correct their habits of speeding
and reckless driving, then YOU are responsible for their death.
