I'm an overseas student from China and I've been in England for 4 years.
This is the third year of my PhD under the supervision of Fiona Meldrum. My
project is about carrying out crystallisation in small volumes, using a
Crossed-Cylinder apparatus and with addition of various additives. I have
begun to explore the use of this system to study CaSO4 precipitation in bulk
solution and confinement. And it appears that amorphous calcium sulfate (
ACS) and metastable phase, hemihydrate exist in room temperature as early
precursors. Our paper is the first one to report this new precipitation
pathway! And also these metastable phases can be stabilized with addition of
additives, like PAA or magnesium ions. Crossed cylinder system will now be
investigated in depth, studying in the first instance both calcium carbonate
and calcium sulfate precipitation, and controlling the surface chemistry of
the reaction environment using self-assembled monolayers (SAMs).
Before I came to Leeds, I received a master degree in polymeric materials
from the University of Sheffield. In my free time, I enjoy listening to
