I've studied at your school for 25 years.
You raised me to believe that regardless of income, race, or gender,
education is a fundamental right and one of the most valuable & liberating
experiences in life.
You taught me how to love and that all people: gay, straight, queer, trans--
deserve to express their love equally, openly and safely.
You brought me to an anti-war rally when I was 10 years old to hear Howard
Zinn and Tim Robbins speak on the US military industrial complex and the
atrocities of the Iraq war.
You taught me about the death penalty and how it is not only ethically
deplorable, but also economically and racially unsound. I even watched as
you argued in front of the NH state legislature to abolish it.
You brought me to the Global Citizens Circle events which broadened my
perspective to see outside of our small white town, our small white state,
and our big bad country--to address poverty, disease and violence worldwide
with peace & discourse.
You showed me films like Fahrenheit 911, Inside Job, Inconvenient Truth,
Religulous, Jesus Camp, Food Inc., The Weather Underground, Bowling for
Columbine, The Yes Men, Sicko, Who Killed the Electric Car, Why We Fight--
all art that exposes hypocrisy, corruption, greed and the insidious
capitalism that controls this country.
You taught me about being a baby boomer, about the Vietnam war, about being
"freaks" instead of "hippies", about getting drafted, and about not being
someone's "chick." You taught me that music & art are political tools. That
your parents generation just didn't understand. That equality is more
important than security. That political action is imperative as a citizen of
this country. That it was cool to vote for Ralph Nader. That change doesn't
need a precedent to be viable. That the establishment has rarely, if ever,
been right. That we serve those less fortunate and we never, ever, ever stop
debating.
Most importantly, you taught me that women should never be under anyone's
thumb.
So, why are you voting for Hilary Clinton?
Did I miss a lesson?
Did I miss the part where resistance got confused with idealism, where
practicality trumps values and where identity politics outweigh
revolutionary ideas? Because if I missed that lesson, then your 25 year old
daughter is failing your class.
So, Bernie Sanders, you can thank my parents for my vote, but you can't
thank them for theirs.

So you want to know why I'm voting for Hillary? Many, many reasons. First of
all she's the smartest person in the room, any room. At least any room I've
ever been in that she's in. Secondly she's a democrat, not just for the
last ten minutes, but most of her life. She shares democratic values, these
are also my values. She has been a champion for the poor, and oppressed for
decades. She has been a champion for women's rights, not only in terms of
legislation, but as an example of what women can achieve. She's a fighter
and does not suffer fools gladly. She is respected around the world not only
by world leaders but also the people of hundreds of countries that look to
the United States an an example of good will and freedom.
We were were young once and supported George McGovern, his was the first
campaign I ever worked on. Bernie is the Millenials' George McGovern. George
McGovern lost 49 out of 50 States in the General election. Can you say
Richard Nixon? Granted times were different and of course there was the war,
being anti-war made us feel great, but we still ended up with Nixon.
Ultimately, I don't think Bernie will get the nomination, if he does I'm not
sure he can win the General. I will support him if he does. But I believe
Hillary will get the nomination and stands the best chance of winning the
White House. The biggest evil I see in this cycle is the prospect of the
GOP winning in November. You did not live through the cold war, and do not
have the perspective of how the Repubs will go after a "socialist." Bernie
has not been in that crucible, they will destroy him.
I admire your idealism, and even share a certain nostalgia for my own youth
as a result. However, I fear what the Repubs will do if they get the White
House, this election is too important in our nation's history to gamble on
an idealistic political purist, who is ultimately flawed (no matter how many
values we share). So I will proudly vote for Hillary, and be prouder still
should she become our first women president. There has never been anyone
more qualified and prepared to take the office of president. As my website
says: experience matters, no has more than Hillary. She will be a great
president.
Just so you know my sweet daughter, I am very proud of you and your brothers
. I am proud that you are involved and are passionate about your candidate
of choice. The lessons you learned were good ones. I think you are about to
learn a few more. I am glad you were paying attention. LOL . |
