That is a pet peeve of mine. When I was in high school, we'd constantly hear
that colleges want "leadership". And in my career I hear about how I lack "
leadership". Like you said, being good looking and talkative is one way of
defining leadership. In high school, I mostly was told that colleges want
people who are "leaders" in extra-curricular activities, not participants.
But the "leaders" would be selected by a popular vote, so they were
basically popularity contests. So, effectively, colleges were looking for
winners of high school popularity contests. And then there are the service
academies, who define "leadership" as "athletic". As if sports are the only
way that you can be a "leader". Also, whether fairly or not, high achieving
students are labeled as "lacking leadership", even by people who don't know
us. It seems it's just another way to promote the popular, athletic kids
while putting us high achieving students in our place.

Leadership".
