Liu was born in 1976 in Lanzhou, China.[3] His mother, who received her Ph.D

English Literature and Computer Science, receiving his A. B. in 1998.[5][6]
After graduation, he worked as a software engineer for Microsoft, and was
involved with a start-up in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He later received his
J.D. from the Harvard Law School in 2004 and after working as a corporate
lawyer, eventually became a high-tech litigation consultant.[5][6] In 2002,
he turned to writing, as well as translating, fiction.[5]
