The Most Popular Things to Do in San Francisco:
This list includes the most popular things to do in San Francisco, its
most popular tourist attractions and activities. It is based on a survey
done several years ago by the Convention and Visitors Bureau, and my
observations of the most popular things to do in san francisco.
Things to do in San Francisco: Waterfront:
>Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39 and Ghirardelli Square, covering about half
a dozen blocks along the waterfront, constitute much of the
stereotypical San Francisco image and together are perhaps the most
popular things to do in San Francisco. Tourists walking here are
entertained by street perf-o-r-mers and tempted by souvenir shops and
restaurants.
While these places are popular, and many people feel they haven't
visited San Francisco unless they've seen them, keep in mind that this
tourist haven bears little resemblance to the rest of the city of San
Francisco.
>The Golden Gate Bridge is an engineering marvel. Not only is it one of
the city's most enjoyable things to do, but it's also one of the most-
photographed sights in the world. A walk on it is a must.
>Alcatraz, the f-o-r-mer prison, wasn't always a place people wanted to
go, but today it's one of the city's most popular sights. Reserve your
tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.
Things to do in San Francisco - Around Town:
>Union Square, one of the city's three original parks, is now a public
space atop a multi-level underground parking garage and ringed with
elegant shops and hotels. The Powell cable car line begins about a block
away, and the theatre district is nearby.
>Cable Cars are often called San Francisco's moving landmark.
>Chinatown expresses what Western architects thought Chinese buildings
should look like. There's much here that's created just for the tourist,
but with our hints, you can get a glimpse of the "real" Chinatown in its
alleys and shops.
>Lombard, the "Crookedest" Street is neither the crookedest street in
San Francisco nor the steepest, but it's surely the best-known. The
"crooked" section is the block below Hyde Street. No car to drive down?
Take the cable car to Hyde and Lombard and walk.
>Coit Tower, atop Telegraph Hill offers panoramic bay and city views,
and a bit of San Francisco in the 1930s preserved in its murals.
Things to do in San Francisco - On the Ocean and Bay:
>Sausalito, just across San Francisco Bay, has some of the best views OF
San Francisco in the area. Take a ferry over, browse a few art galleries
and have lunch or dinner at Spinnaker, one of my favorite area
restaurants.
>Cliff House, on Ocean Beach. has been a San Francisco standard since
1863, when the first Cliff House was built. Today's version is the
fourth restaurant to stand on this spot.
There are plenty of other things to do in San Francisco besides the ones
on this list. If you're looking for more things to do, something
different or perhaps a few sights that reflect the "real" San Francisco
more than its tourist facade, start with the More Things to Do in San
Francisco: Best of the Rest. If you are very interested in a specific
things to do or activities, and you have plenty of inf-o-r-mation, don't
skip them because of my recommendations. However, if you don't know much
about it, there may be a reason why it's not listed. Research these
things to do carefully before you go to be sure you spend your vacation
time and money wisely.
>The Exploratorium is a modern, hands-on science museum housed in The
Palace of Fine Arts, a Roman-style. remainder of the 1915 Panama-Pacific
International Exposition. The outdoor rotunda, and its lagoon, are some
of the city's most-photographed sights
Golden Gate Park is the city's largest park. One of the most popular
attractions in the park is the Japanese Tea Garden, but there's plenty
more to see here, including the Strybing Arboretum, California Academy
of Sciences and Conservatory of Flowers.
>Ferry Building Marketplaceis one of the city's liveliest venues as its
shops fill with local artisan food shops and restaurants, and tourists
mix with locals at the weekly Farmers' markets.
>Victorian Houses, or "painted ladies" seem synonymous with San
Francisco. Some of the best are found near Alamo Square.
>The Palace of the Legion of Honor is one of San Francisco's premier art
museums. They hold an impressive collection of Rodin statues, including
The Thinker, which sits in their outer courtyard.
>Musee Mechanique, which was once housed under the Cliff House and is
now located on Pier 45 at the end of Taylor Street, is a collection of
over 160 coin-operated automatic mechanical musical instruments and old-
fashioned penny arcade games. Even in the age of Game Boy and
PlayStation, their fortune tellers, strength testers, photo booths and
games of chance still enchant.
>Nob Hill is famous for panoramic views, expensive hotels and
restaurants, but you can hang out in Huntington Park or visit Grace
Cathedral for free.
>Twin Peaks offers the highest vantage point in the city of San
Francisco. Travel on Market Street away from the waterfront, and follow
the signs to reach a vista point with expansive city and Bay views.
>49-Mile Drive Blue and white seagull signs lead you through the city,
and although part of the drive is not very scenic, this is a great way
to learn what ALL the city is about. Pick up a map at the Visitors
Center on Powell before you go, the signs make popular souvenirs and
often disappear.
>North Beach is an Italian veneer laid over a half-Chinese neighborhood,
and that's only the first of its many surprises and contradictions. This
is the place to go for authentic Italian food, people-watching in the
park and interesting neighborhood shops.
>Cable Car Barn Museum Massive motors here spin the cables that draw San
Francisco's cable cars up and down its hills. Exhibits include antique
cable cars and photos from the renovation.
>Camera Obscura The small building behind the Cliff House dressed up
like a giant camera is camera obscura, built based on a fifteenth
century design by Leonardo da Vinci. Inside, images are collected from
the surrounding ocean and beach and displayed on a parabolic dish.
>Mission San Francisco San Francisco's oldest building, and California's
second-oldest Spanish mission, Mission San Francisco preserves the
city's oldest times.
>City Hall Spanning over two city blocks and sporting a spectacular
black-and-gold dome that rises over 300 feet tall, San Francisco's City
Hall is a National Landmark. Explore it on a public tour.
