, a preacher father who tried to use the athletic talents of his son to
capitalize and market opportunities. With Newton, the father tried to
solicit funds for where his son would go to school. With Reggie Bush, the
father tried to set up a marketing agency to represent his son.
“I was always told the parent is the child,” Haden told the LA Times Gary
Klein. “That’s what we’ve been telling our kids. If the parent does
something inappropriate the child suffers the consequences. In the Reggie
Bush case, when the parent [did] something inappropriate the kid and the
school suffered.”
With the apparent discrepancy in how the NCAA ruled in the two cases, Haden
said the Newton case will be reviewed before the USC officials appear before
the NCAA Appeals Committee in January.
“Intuitively, it seems appropriate that we would discuss it,” he told the
LA Times.
