Dear Admissions Committee:
It is a pleasure to recommend Mary Jane for admission to your program. She
was my student during the Summer 2010 semester in Econ330-Statistics, an
intermediate economics course that I teach primarily to juniors and seniors
who have been accepted into our economics or business program. I have taught
this course over the years to approximately 500 students. My remarks about
Ms. Mary Jane will be based on a comparison with this sample of students. I
do not know of any of students who applied to your specific program, but I
have had students who applied to top tier law schools, statistics programs
at top tier universities, and Simon School’s Early Leaders’ Program at the
University of Rochester.
Ms. Mary Jane’s intelligence and motivation easily places her above 98% of
the students I have taught. She is an example of the rare student who finds
a passion for the subject matter and is excited to share her passion with
others. Her love of learning was evident from the first day. She took
copious notes that upon reflection were better than mine own. She eagerly
participated in class by asking questions and answering questions. Her
comments showed that she understood the material in depth. Ms. Mary Jane
went beyond what was needed to get an “A+” in the class. She clearly
enjoyed learning and wanted more material than what I assigned. The course
required significant teamwork. Team assignments were required throughout the
semester. She generously provided assistance when needed to complete the
tasks. Most of the assignments are quantitative questions that require the
students to apply concepts from the book and solve problems. Ms. Mary Jane
was always one of the first in the class to finish the problem and answer
them correctly. She displayed an aptitude for quantitative reasoning and
problem solving. Through various occasions, from course team to
extracurricular activities, she had shown her leadership abilities. She was
always there to help and to create ways to handle ad-hoc tasks. And she is
the founder of LotsFun College Archery Club.
Ms. Mary Jane regularly reads economic magazines and follows the current
business news. She enjoys economics primarily for its ideas and is able to
formulate them clearly. She is extremely self-motivated, detail-oriented,
works very well under pressure and maintains a very professional attitude at
all times. Now given the wide array of tools she has been sharpening over
the years, I also expect her to broaden her horizons significantly.
To summarize, Ms. Mary Jane is an engaging person with a pleasant and hands-
on personality who is ready to embark on a wonderful career. She is not only
passionate about what she does, but is also amiable and approachable.
Mary Jane has my strong and enthusiastic recommendation.

here should add some emphasis on leadership skills. for example,
