another word, you didn't know all the stories behind what you heard. Of
course your comments with these limited info were misleading in many ways (
right in other ways).
The fact is re-org occurred prior to layoff this time. Those people retained
were able to transfer to other departments/groups. The total number is
probably not as big as the layoff number, but still significant.
Layoff is not something people want to see.

我认识被ABT LAID OFF的，现在都还挂在那里没下家
小规模的LAYOFF就是不好办，
除非你的头儿是很硬的主，能率领手下的出埃及
大规模LAYOFF的如PFIZER的就有很好的PACKAGE
ANN ARBOR那边拿的遣散费都能撑过明年春节
而且部门的主管也很大方的出差旅费鼓励手下找工作
