Illinois Vote on Civil Unions Today?
By Julie Bolcer
The Illinois House of Representatives could vote on a civil unions measure
for same-sex couples as early as Tuesday during the lame-duck session. The
bill has a strong chance of passage in the senate and Governor Pat Quinn has
pledged to sign it.
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, supporters of the measure
including Rep. Greg Harris, the openly gay Democratic sponsor from Chicago,
were still counting votes in the House on Monday.
"I'm an eternal optimist,” said Harris, according to the Post-Dispatch. “
He predicted the bill could get a floor debate today or Wednesday, the last
days this year in which the House is scheduled to meet.”
The 118-member chamber is also scheduled to meet for several days in early
January before new legislators are sworn in. In the new session, Democrats
will continue to control both houses of the General Assembly and the
governor’s mansion in Illinois.
The Post-Dispatch reports that polling shows Illinois residents are more
comfortable with the idea of civil unions than marriage equality. |
