Runners who need more than a "finisher" certificate or T-shirt, or a "
survivor" ribbon or medal, to proclaim their specialness don't recognize
that they already are special for having raced at all. No one else could
have run their race for them, so they are unique.
The race itself can be rewarding enough. Setting a goal, training well,
making an honest effort, displaying toughness and smartness, recording a
satisfying result -- these are the true rewards of racing. They are
available to everyone. But like all meaningful prizes, they must be earned
with effort.
