running. It is believable for competitive distance runners. I have met a
russian colleague who is mostly interested in soccer athletically, not
specialized in running, and has a 3km PR of something like 9:03. A guy who
could run at that pace day in and day out would be extremely impressive.

there has been one and only one silver
medalist from USSR in running -- Yevgeniy Arzhanov. He was the poor guy
beaten by Dave Wottle by a split
of a second in the classic 1972 Olympics 800m race. You can ask your boss if
that's the guy.
