distraction.
This past Sunday was my third year in a row running the same 5K. It
was rainy but not too cold. The competitors were ferocious. The top
finisher gets done with a respectable 14.xx. The route was through the
street of Washington Height, a welcome change from the loops of Central
Park. The hills are not as steep but the spectators are at typical NYC
level decibel. There was live music playing along the route, which was
a nice distraction when you're a gasping for air.
Either I have regressed or I have passed my prime, maybe the truth is
both. Anyway, I'm disgusted with finishing a 5K in 2x:xx. This time,
I've decided to make a run for it. All out all the way through. No
regrets.
So, like all shorter races, pain is inescapable. The pace I'm capable
of is determined in the first half mile. Since I never trained for 5K.
There's only one way to find out, it is to see if I can maintain a cruising
speed. There's really no strategy per se, I did tried to gut
out the first 10 minutes. The rest will depend keep up with the flow.
Time: 19:35. My PR for this distance. One other esteemed board
member did a 19.xx as well. Three other high achievers show up too.
Looks like everyone had a great time. |
