c*******r 发帖数: 13580 | 1 Leg 29: empty the tank
My 3rd leg is my hardest leg. It starts with a continous 3.5 mile climb,
which gets gradually steeper. It then follows a 3 mile downhill almost as
steep. The course started out in the shade. "Nice", I said to myself. First
mile was pretty steep, I decided not to look at the GPS except at mile
splits and run by feel. Split 1 was 8:10, which was surprisingly fast. The
hill levels out a little after mile 1, just enough to relax my quads a
little before picking up the pace. Mile 2 turned out to be relatively flat,
with only 200 ft to climb. I picked up the pace and did a 7:35 split. All of
a sudden, the road steepens significantly and the trees start to disappear.
It was 1:30 in the afternoon, the sun was relentless. My shorts were
totally soaked. My crew watered me at around mile 2. After another half mile
, a van stopped at a pull-out and a girl was hold a sponge and offered to
cool me down. She sqeezed ice water on the top of my head and it immediately
I felt so refreshed and thanked her. A runner was starting to walk. As I
passed by, I told him there was only a quarter mile to go before the top. I
lied, I knew there was at least half a mile but it worked. He started to run
again. As I passed by another runner, I yelled "let's empty the tank!". I
was determined to leave everything I have here in Oregon. The trees got even
sparser and the sun was scorching my bare shoulders. I was now able to see
a few vans parked on a big pull-out and it looked like it was the top.
Monica poured a whole bottle of water on my back, and fish yelled to me "
hold on buddy, almost to the top". I couldn't speak full sentences, but
nodded to them to appreciate the encouragement. The moment I got to the top,
I felt a great relief, "now it's all downhill from here", I told myself.
However, just as I started to go down, I felt a tightness in the calves. It
was the change in the running form that triggered the cramp. I had to land
more on the heels to use the quads to cushion the impact so that the calves
can get a little rest. My calves also almost cramped in the last 0.2 miles
of my marathon two months ago. It was also a downhill. The downhill now
became a struggle too. I was able to sustain a 6:30 pace for a little while.
Before long, 6:30 became 7ish. But fortunately the hill leveled out a
little. In addition to the hill, the road is also winding. At all the curves
, the road would also be tilted sideways to make cars safer. But that makes
running a lot harder. I had to cut a lot of corners to keep balance. With no
runner in sight, it was really hard to focus on maintaining the pace. The
final stretch of the course went back into the shade and is straight. My
sight was blurred by the sweat, all I can see is a slim figure in distance.
I figured that must be Monica. I yelled my bib number to the volunteer and
dashed into the exchange zone. I gave the wrist band to Monica, patted her
on the shoulder and said "it's all yours now, buddy". Now the hardest part
is over for me. I sat in the van and finished half of a watermelon.
Leg 29, very hard, 6.11 miles, road kill 7.
At the next exhange, I tried to stretch the muscles. All of a sudden, I felt
the cramp in the calves and quads again, then the abs. The cramps in the
abs were so bad that I had to sit on the ground for a couple of minutes.
After I got back in the van, I flushed down a whole bottle of gatorade to
supplement electrolyte, and it worked.
Leg 32 that almost happened
We arrived at exchange 31 20 minutes before our predicted time and waited
for van 2, which wasn't in sight yet. After what happened at exchange 24, we
were a little nervous. As the time went by, we got more and more anxious.
We were discussing our backup plan. Everyone had already run 3 legs and was
totally exhausted. I checked the elevation profile, it was a 4ish mile
moderate leg. So I decided that if the worst happens, I'd run it for van 2.
I had rested for about an hour and half, legs were still sore, but I felt
like I could at least keep a 9:00 pace for 4 miles. I stuffed a couple
bananas down the throat and flushed down a bottle of water with nuun tablets
. I knew this would be as hard as the last 6 miles of the marathon, but I
was confident that I could do it, and I was getting ready for the suffer.
Then about 3 minutes before the predicted time, out of no where came out
julian and fff. You have no idea how relieved how I was at that moment! It
turned out that they parked behind the building and they had been there for
least an hour.
We exchanged at exchange 31 and our van was now officially off duty. There
is a shortcut to the finishline in Seaside, but I decided to take a detour
to Astoria to have lunch and show the crew around this beautiful coast town. | y******n 发帖数: 4527 | 2 awesome leg.
