1. the most comfortable shoes aren't necessarily good for you.
2. if it's comfortable during the run, it doesn't mean that the shoes are
good. you could end up in pain the next day.
3. and even if you are okay wearing a pair for a month, you could get
injured later. if certain muscles are weakened because of the shoes, the
effect won't show up until much later.
plus, most people would have no problem running 10-20 miles per week wearing whatever shoes they
want. when I first started running I even wore basketball shoes.
the problem only shows up when they increase their mileage to 40, 50, or 70 later on.

This is a tricky question and it is still under debate. But what about a

These questions really bothered me when I was about starting to run. But I
did not really get stuck on shoes. I just picked up an old basket ball shoe
and ran.
In term of longer effect what the shoes will contribute to your form, your
efficiency, and your injury, I personally think it is out of the topic for
newbies at this point. As you said, it is a difficult question. It still
needs more evidence to prove. But it will be great to have a review to
summarize the discussion on this topic and I will put the link in the FAQ.

flats), not necessarily that the shoes are good for you.
There is no evidence that pronation matters in the choice of running shoes.

shown in Lieberman's lab tests (barefoot heelstrike vs shoes heelstrike).
The point of debate is whether cushioned shoes messes up the running form by
allowing excessive heelstrike. Most recreational runners are not very much
aware of their poor running forms and this is where the problem lies. I
certainly agree that running form is infinitely more important than the
choice of shoes, but for newbies, especially, the form can be easily messed
up by a poor choice of shoes. It is also common sense that the thicker the
heel cushion is, the more natural it would be to land on the heels, just
because it is closer to the ground.
