Speakers:
Louise Su Tang was born and spent her early years in Shanghai . After a 3-
year interlude in U.S. when her father was Chinese Consul in U.S. for
Republic of China, she completed her secondary education in Shanghai . She
immigrated with her family to U.S. in late 1940's and has lived in U.S.
ever since. She received her B.A. in journalism and political science
from UC Berkeley, and her M.A. in School Administration from CSULA. Louise
was an educator and is now retired from a thirty-year teaching career in
Los Angeles and Virginia . Louise is married to Kenneth Kai-Nan Tang, an
ex-Marine and a retired JPL engineer. She lives in Pasadena , California ,
where she is active in the Pacific Asia Museum and the College Women
’s Club of Pasadena. She is a member of the Chinese Historical Society of
Southern California and the Chinese American Museum in Los Angeles .
For many years, Louise has been donating to a special colleague scholarship
in China that supports college education of young women with limited
financial resources. Louise's desire to reacquaint herself with the people
and land of her ancestors in China took her to towns and embattlements,
villages and river banks all over China . She wrote and published the book
"“Cantonese Yankee” based on life of her Grandfathers Kwong Bing Kong and
Su Yi Chew as Chinese oversea students in U.S. at the Chinese Educational
Mission (1872-1881).
Dr. Hui Cai (Beida Chemistry 1985) is Vice President of Corporate Alliances
at WuXi AppTec, a NYSE listed premier provider of comprehensive and
integrated services across pharmaceutical R&D value chain with over 5,600
employees and FDA/EMA/OECD/SFDA inspected facilities in US and China . She
brought to WuXi with broad expertise in strategic planning, business
development, along with ten years of drug discovery experience at Johnson &
Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development. She is a co-author and co-
inventor to over 40 scientific publications and issued or pending patents.
Dr. Cai is a Councilor at the American Chemical Society (ACS), the world’s
largest scientific society with 164,000 members worldwide. She is also a
member of Bayhelix, an organization of leaders of Chinese heritage in the
global life sciences and healthcare community. She served in past capacities
as a Commissioner at City of San Diego Science and Technology Commission,
Chairwoman of Board at Sino-American Biomedical and Pharmaceutical
Professionals Association (SABPA), and Chairwoman of the American Chemical
Society San Diego Section. Dr. Cai received her BS and MS in Chemistry from
Peking University , PhD from The Scripps Research Institute, and MBA from
UCSD Rady School of Management as a DLA Piper - Athena FlexMBA Scholar.
Dr. Yuanyuan Zhou (Beida Computer Sciences 1988) is Qualcomm Chair Professor
of Computer Science at UCSD. Prior to UCSD, she was working at University
of Illinois , Urbana-Champaign as a faculty from 2002 to 2009. She was the
recipient of ACM Distinguished Scientist in 2011, the Alfred Sloan
Fellowship 2007, UIUC Gear Faculty Award 2006, NSF Career-2004 award, the
CRA-W Anita-Borg Early Career Award 2005, the DOE Early Career Principle
Investigator Award 2005, the IBM Faculty Award 2004 & 2005, and the IBM SUR-
2003 award. As a mentor, Dr. Zhou has great success in placing students into
research universities and research labs. Dr. Zhou is also an entrepreneur.
She co-founded a storage startup before joining UIUC. Recently, she founded
another start-up, Pattern Insight, and is CTO of the company. Dr. Zhou
obtained her BS degree from Peking University and Ph.D from Princeton
University .
