cause approximately 800 of the 21,000 radon induced lung cancer deaths in
the US each year.

Radon Act 51 passed by Congress set the natural outdoor level of radon gas (
0.4 pCi/L) as the target radon level for indoor radon levels.

The Indoor Radon Abatement Act, also known as Radon Act 51, was passed in
1988 shortly after scientists realized the dangers of radon gas. Officially
it is located under 15 USC Chapter 53, Subchapter III.

The agency’s own Office of Inspector General found in 2008 that the E.P.A.
failed over a 20-year period to notify Congress that it was not reaching the
goals set by lawmakers to reduce indoor radon exposure and that the E.P.A.
never seriously considered an alternative approach.
