Getty ImagesApple shares are zooming higher again today as our corporate
cousins at All Things D are reporting Apple will unveil the iPad 3 next
month.
The stock, which has been on an absolute tear over the last six weeks, has
jumped another 3.6% to $493.80 in recent trading and is inching toward $500.
It’s been a staggering run for the most valuable company in the U.S.,
measured by market capitalization. Apple surpassed Exxon for the top spot
two weeks ago. Since then, the gap has widened to nearly $60 billion,
according to FactSet data.
Apple shares fell as low as $315.32 in June and remained in a choppy trading
range throughout much of the second half of 2011.
Since Nov. 25, shares have soared 35% and hit a fresh intraday high of $495.
12 earlier today.
Even as the stock has been on a fast and furious tear higher, Wall Street
analysts are giddy over its future prospects. Canaccord Genuity boosted its
price target on Apple to $665. Yes, you read that correctly $665.
From Canaccord:
Our January checks indicated iPhone 4S was the top-selling model at AT&T,
Sprint, and Verizon, and we anticipate strong March quarter iPhone sales in
international markets including China. As a result, we are increasing our
March quarter iPhone unit estimate from 30.1M to 32.6M units.
Canccord’s price target would represent another 35% rally from current
levels.
Needham & Co. is also awfully bullish, boosting its price target this
morning from $540 to $620 due to the ability of Apple’s sales “to grow at
an unprecedented rate for a company so large.” Here’s Needham’s take:
Since our previous valuation report, the most important changes in the
competitive landscape have occurred in the media tablet market. With the
introduction of the Amazon Kindle Fire and other low-priced tablets, tablet
sales have grown at a much faster pace than we previously forecast. From the
iPad’s perspective, the device has launched a massive attack on the
business market prompting us to materially increase our forecast of iPad
sales as well. Courtesy of the halo effect, the increase in our forecast of
iPad sales has, in turn, translated into an increase in our forecast of Mac
sales, which is also invading the business market.
Among the risks to such a rosy outlook include the potential that Apple may
not be able to innovate at the same pace as it did under Steve Jobs, Needham
says. Slowing iPhone sales or declining gross margins could also weigh on
the stock.
