Erich Lehmann is Professor Emeritus. He has made fundamental contributions to
the theory of statistics; his principal interests these days are in the
history and philosophy of statistics. He is the author of Basic Concepts of
Probability and Statistics, Elements of Finite Probability, Nonparametrics:
Statistical Methods Based on Ranks, Testing Statistical Hypotheses, and Theory
of Point Estimation. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and
