CALGARY - Perpetual Energy Inc. (TSX:PMT) announced Wednesday that it is
suspending future dividend payments until further notice, citing continued
weakness in natural gas prices.
In a news release, the Calgary-based concern said continued payment of the
dividend — currently 1.5 cents per month producing an annual yield of 7.725
per cent — was not sustainable in the current price environment.
Such payments would also "inhibit Perpetual's continuing efforts to
implement its strategy of commodity and asset base diversification," it said
after markets closed.
Perpetual had been one of the gainers in what was a down day Wednesday on
the Toronto Stock Exchange, rising four cents or 1.75 per cent to $2.33 per
share.
The company said the historic decline in natural gas prices and related
funds flow reductions had previously been offset in large part through a
successful hedging program.
"However, going forward, persistent growth in North American natural gas
supply, coupled with continued strength in gas drilling rig activity,
suggest that a recovery in gas prices may be further delayed."
"As favourable natural gas hedging opportunities are no longer available in
the current market, directing funds flow to the execution of the
diversification strategy is paramount," it said.
Among other things, the company said it is taking steps to transform its
asset base diversify its commodity strategy by building an inventory of
liquids-rich plays in the Alberta Deep Basin and establishing an inventory
of resource-style gas, heavy oil and bitumen opportunities in eastern
Alberta.
It is also exploring for other resource-style oil and liquids-rich gas
opportunities in Alberta. | d******t
