EU Rehn: Will Use Economic Governance Rules From Day One
BRUSSELS (Dow Jones)--The European Commission will use its new economic
governance from the day they take force and member states won't be allowed
to break rules, Commission Vice President for Economic and Monetary Affairs
Olli Rehn said Wednesday.
"I take this responsibility seriously: I will make full use of all these new
instruments from Day One, which is the Dec. 13. We cannot afford to
tolerate a breach of jointly agreed rules by anyone any more," Rehn said. "
We have seen, only too concretely, that it happens at the cost of other
member states."
New rules agreed over the summer give Brussels more oversight of European
Union fiscal policies will take effect between mid-December and the start of
January. The Commission made fresh proposals Wednesday that would give
Brussels further power over member states but these rules must still be
agreed to. The latter include a proposal for some kind of euro-zone bond.
Rehn said the Commission's strategy for beating the crisis is "restoring
fiscal and financial stability."
He said structural reforms are needed because "public finances are deeply
under stress."
