After suffering three consecutive losses to Juan Martin del Potro on hard
courts, world No. 1 Rafael Nadal gets revenge by besting the Argentine 6-4,
6-4 in the semis of Indian Wells and admits he was shadow of himself when
del Potro crushed him in the 2009 U.S. Open semis.
"I had the three centimeters abdominal broke in that moment,” Nadal said.
“The second half of the year, I had too many problems. I broke my abdominal
in Montreal. After, seems I was a little bit better in Cincinnati, but
after a few matches, another time I felt the abdominal. In U.S. Open I was
bad since the second round, but I keep playing, playing. Finally I had to
stop one month without play. So we can't compare matches when you are not
healthy. I am sure with my level of 2009 in that moment, without injury, I
was [going to lose], but not 6-2, 6-2, 6-2."
The Spaniard added that del Potro, who returned to the tour at the beginning
of the season after spending most of 2010 sidelined due to wrist surgery,
is sure to be contending all year long.
"For Del Potro, the final of U.S. Open and semifinals for me was his highest
level,” Nadal said. "You can arrive to this level, but not every day. The
normal level of everybody is a little bit lower always? Is impossible play
all the time full power shots, all the balls inside, having serve all the
time, first and second serve very fast. So I think he's doing well…I am
happy to see him back on the tour. He is one of the best players of the
world, to be sure. I sure he's going to be at the top positions very soon."

还不忘说Del Potro是超水平发挥，言下之意，正常水平下Potro本来不是对手。
很可惜，Del Potro 的打法有些克 Nadal，等他完全恢复后Nadal照样会胜少

original interview, not just some fragments some writer puts together. Here
is the link to the original interview. I was sure that a reporter must have
asked about the 2009 match and therefore Rafa's response, and that's exactly
what happened.

RAFAEL NADAL: The players? Him?
Q. Yes.
RAFAEL NADAL: 2009 he won the US Open, and probably he played the best level
of his career by far. It's difficult to play at this level all the time.
That's true, no? The normal thing is not when you played your best.
For me, my normal level is not when I played the final of the US Open, or I
don't know. That's my highest level. For Del Potro, the final of US Open and
semifinals for me was his highest level. So that's not the normal thing.
You can arrive to this level, but not every day, no?
And the normal level of everybody is a little bit lower always, no? Is
impossible play all the time full power shots, all the balls inside, having
serve all the time, first and second serve very fast.
So I think he's doing well. He won a tournament four weeks ago. Right now he
arrive at the semifinals having very good victories. I am happy to see him
back on the tour.
He is one of the best players of the world, to be sure. I sure he's going to
be at the top positions very soon.
Q. How much do you think you've improved since the 2009 US Open, maybe the
serve, the volley?
RAFAEL NADAL: Is not -- I had the three centimeters abdominal broke in that
moment, no? I improved my game in general, but that year, the second half of
the year, I had too many problems.
I broke my abdominal in Montreal or Toronto, I remember, a little bit. After
, seems I was a little bit better in Cincinnati, but after a few matches,
another time I felt the abdominal.
In US Open I was bad since the second round, but I keep playing, playing.
Finally I had to stop one month without play. So we can't see -- we can't
compare matches when you are not healthy.
Q. How is your health right now?
RAFAEL NADAL: You know, I am sure with my level of 2009 in that moment,

you need to alter your game to adjust to that?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, if I'm healthy I can handle those guys, you know.
Obviously it's a pity that Del Potro is not around, because I think he would
have a run at world No. 1 or a run at another Grand Slam. It's unfortunate
for him.
But, you know, he's been playing well, and these guys do play very well. I
played these guys 10 times. They're not going to reinvent themselves in a
year, you know.
But I'm definitely struggling at the moment. That's a bit disappointing.
Q. When did you first start feeling the problems?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, the leg came in the finals of Halle. That kind of never
really quite got away from me. Came back a little bit after the first‑
;round match, and then went away again and just kept creeping back sometimes
during the matches.
The back's been feeling stiff the last five days, six days really badly.
Also in the finals of Halle. It's just something that's been lingering on
the grass. It's normal that the back tends to get stiff, you know, in the
grass court season because you have to, uhm, go for many more lower shots.
I've had that for many years. I think many players have it. But it's not
just not nice when it doesn't go away and you can't play freely. That's what
I was missing today.

to fight for them. I know it does not make any difference whatsoever, but I
just can't help it. I think I am getting better at ignoring Nadal haters
though, especially the really unreasonable ones.
