Rather than indulge in teenage angst, Catherine Chen instead poured her
creativity out on paper, doodling comic characters and crafting storylines.
Those secret sketches - drawings she was too shy to even show family members
- have now translated into a published comic strip.
The 17-year-old Rancho Palos Verdes resident has yet to even graduate high
school.
"We didn't even know she had done it," her father, Anthony Chen, said of the
comic.
Catherine decided first to show the drawings to her tennis coach, Sean
McRoberts, who had inadvertently inspired Catherine by challenging her to
think about about how to teach a concept. She opted for a story.
"Catherine was shy, so I wanted to connect with her," said McRoberts, who
has coached Catherine since the seventh grade. "I didn't realize what I was
sparking in her."
Catherine, who is donating profits from the comic to charity, certainly sees
parts of herself in the character she brought to life. The comic, called "
Aced," features Yuki Chitose, an aspiring teenage tennis player struggling
to overcome insecurities as she rises through the national rankings.
Catherine said she based the character on her own life experiences - and
imagined the rest.
"She's introverted, and so am I," said Catherine, an incoming senior at
Palos Verdes High School. "But she's more uncertain about what she wants."
The comic is in the Japanese style of manga, which

means "whimsical pictures." The style is distinctive, epitomized by wide-
eyed characters with graceful bodies and sharp, spikey hair.
In the world of manga, however, words are just one part of a larger art.
"Manga art is really fantastical and aesthetically pleasing," Catherine said
. "I had to make sure my style fit that."
The project, which took about a year, was completed in secrecy. In fact, to
this day there are pages full of unseen illustrations, drawings she refuses
to show anyone.
It was only fitting that Catherine chose her coach to be the first person to
see the comic.
"I was amazed," McRoberts said. "She was embarrassed when she showed me -
she couldn't even watch me read it, she was that humble about it."
That attitude prevails to this day, because the thought that other people
are reading her comic is slightly distressing.
"I feel bad for them because I feel that it isn't that good," she said. "But
I know it's for charity."
That reason alone convinced her to publish the book. All of the proceeds of
the comic go to the Andre Agassi Foundation for Education. Sold online
through Yutopian Enterprises, Catherine's comic sales have so far raised $1,
000.
"That makes me so proud," said Jessica Chen, Catherine's mother. "The most
important thing to me was that my children cared for others."
The comic is just one addition to Catherine's already impressive resume,
which includes a 5.0 GPA, an internship at Los Angeles Biomedical Research
Institute near Torrance, and the possibility of playing college tennis.
"She was always different," Jessica Chen said. "She was always focused."
When her daughter was 2, Jessica Chen said she took Catherine to a Mommy and
Me tennis activity. While the other children drank apple juice, Catherine
continued hitting tennis balls. By the end of the event, she'd hit a total
of 200 balls.
"We don't push her," Jessica Chen said. "We don't have to. She pushes
herself."
Her coach added that "she's one of those people who will make a difference
and impact the world for the better."
What drives her so hard?
"Fear of failure," Catherine said. "I like to do my best in everything."
Though she justifiably could grab the spotlight for herself, she constantly
is redirecting it.
"The comic isn't so much about me as it is about helping others with the
proceeds," she said. "That is really what I want people to understand."

他跟Shields分手跟他的内向有些关系。其实他俩分了的好，不是一路人，Shields也太老了。
当年是哪个脑残把Brook Shields翻译成什么小丝？ 多半是港台的恶心翻译吧。

话说这名字的翻译还是比较有韵味的，照这么翻的话罗迪克太太Brooklyn Decker
就是波姬小德，哈哈。
