想问问各位达人有没有之前的游记，比如在那里停留，或者沿途那些地方不应该错过。
自己感觉一天开车还是不太超过500mile为好，不用搞的太累。
看google map似乎经过cleveland， chicago， iowa city， omaha，lincon grand
island。。

iowa city 啥都没有，路过des moines时候可以去看廊桥，omaha也就动物园可以一看，
建议走80，badland np, 总统山， devil's tower, grand tetan,也可以在黄石走马观

稍微绕一些不过过了芝加哥的那段好像是比80稍有意思点
黄石和grand teton还得再绕，这俩感觉不如到slc安定下来再去了，既然都搬家到了
slc，
附近的公园还是很方便的

some tips.
1. once you move to Salt lake city, you are in four corner states (Utah,
Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona) + Wyoming, you have plenty of time to explore
the national parks there. So you don't need to focus on the national park
in these states.
Instead, plan to visit some places where you may never consider. such as
South Dakota, or Route 66.
2. for this road trip, so you will not be able to go deeper. but that's Ok,
You only have 4 hours in national park, not a big deal, at least you know if
you will like it, and you can come back years later.
3. depends on when you start to travel, if it's winter, then avoid either
south dakota or denver, choose route 66.
if it's end of Sept, then choose either denver or rotue 66
if it's middle of summer, avoid route 66, it's hot.
4. if you drive 1 sedan, not uhaul, no furniture, then 400 miles per day is
max. If you have 10 days, I assume you can connect to weekend, so if needed,
you are flexible to extend to 12 or 14 days, then 300 miles a day is ideal.
Since you across half america, you will see variety of things, city,
mountain, native indian powwow/festival, food, weather... you will never be
bored.
5. you don't need to book hotel in advance. book the hotel at same day.
motel 6 or super 8 is convenient.
6. if you never been to New Mexico, suggest you take route 66 route and
drive to Santa fe, high raod, taos. Chaco Canyon, visit some Native indian
Pueblo. they have festival and dance, check their schedule and plan
accoridingly.
route 66 route will be most time consuming, but much more choice, state,
city, nature, culture
buy a book from lonely planet about route 66, a small booklet. very helpful.
7. on the road, there is not much choice in Massachusetts, New York,
Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois
Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas
most landscape/nature is in New Mexico, Colorao, Utha, Arizona, Wyoming, and
west part of South Dakota. So drive more in first half, and enjoy more in
second half.
last year I drove from Detroit to Devil's tower, and at Badlands I met a
Dad and daughter who drove from boston to Yellowstone. they said 2 drivers
drove non-stop for about 30 hours for 1800 miles (boston to badlands). I am
not suggesting you to do the same consider your parents also travel with you
. but it give you some perspetive that there is not much choice in your 1st
part of the trip.

发帖数: 1130 | 17 snodin, safty is first. plan as detail as you can, as many options as you
can, then adjust your plan on the raod.
chicago is the middle point. rest 1 day there and adjust you plan based on
how your parents feel, are they tired? how is the weather in
denver/SD, and then to decide which route to take.
In Chicago, tour the city there, take architecture boat tour, eat pho at
vietnam Tank, or spanish tapa at Café Iberico.
to take a good picture of downtown chicago, go to Shedd Aquarium (meter
parking) at morning or at night.
To get a nice sunset/night view of chicago. go to John hancock signature
room at 96th floor (bar) 1 hour before sunset, admission free, but need to
buy food or drink, such as $8 beer --
same view as you buy ticket to the john hancock observatory (which need wait
in the line).
I personally don't like chinese restaurant in Chinatown of Chicago. I more
like Mapo Restaurant at sub, Naperville, IL. But it's worthy a visit in
Chinatown.
however, skip Lao Sichuan. I have been there dozen times in past years, and
get disappointed more and more, and evetually I stop go there.
Generally speaking, at early May Rapid city of SD, Denver, Santa fe is about
40-60 degree. If you only stay on highway, don't go to national park,
wilderness area, most likely
you don't need to worry, unless there is snow blizzard.
However, if you want to visit national park, May is not best time to visit
Yellowstone or Grand teton or rocky mountain national park
because weather is not predictable, you can get mild temperatures and
sunshine but also massive rain and even snow. Some roads might be closed in
early may.
road is muddy, and challenging to drive is you don't have 4wd. however the
moose, elk, deer, buffalo and all kinds of other wild animals are having
their babies
at this time, good for wildlife viewing. btw, buy a national park pass for $
80, worthy the money.
in New mexico there are some activity:
4/28-30 gathering of nation at Alburquerque, NM.
On May 1 San Felipe Indian Pueblo Feast Day and Corn Dance.
and May 3 Santa Cruz Feast Day and Corn Dance at Cochiti Indian Pueblo.
But if you leave boston on early May, you most likely will miss all these
events.
seems like you drive your own car, flexible at start/end date/time, so don't
need to book hotel/motel in advance, follow your own pace, adjust your plan
on fly.
get a reliable GPS, get map as backup, get a AAA service. get you laptop,
and you can get wifi in mcdonald to book hotel.
