Kathleen Allen was used to hearing her four children cheer "Go Mommy, Go!"
Most of the time those cheers came at races - the 39-year-old is one of the
top age group triathletes in the United States. Two years ago, though, her
children were cheering for her just to re-learn how to walk - motivation
which helped her overcome a horrific accident and return to triathlon racing
. Allen's story is one of those you'll get to see during NBC's coverage of
the Ford Ironman World Championship on Saturday, December 18, from 4 - 6 PM
EST. (Check local listings.)
On August 24, 207, just five days before she was to represent the United
States at the ITU World Championships in 2007, Allen was hit by a truck
while out for a routine training ride. She broke seven bones, her neck at C6
, her back at T8, T10 and T12, both of her wrists and the top of left rib.
Her glasses shattered into her forehead and her handlebars broke into her
right finger, almost severing it. She tore her brachioplexus muscle and had
no use of her right arm. Allen was unconscious for several minutes and had
bruising and swelling in her brain. Upon arrival at the hospital, doctors
discovered that her left carotid artery was seriously damaged on impact and
contained a large clot and, despite blood thinners, she had a minor stroke.
Blood thinners caused a large bruise on her right leg to develop into
compartment syndrome, and doctors had to perform six operations to remove
additional blood clots and keep the muscle alive, preventing amputation.
Allen spent 22 days in the hospital, with eight of those days in the
intensive care unit.
Allen went through an intense period of physical therapy, but she thought of
the time like training for a triathlon, knowing she had to start somewhere
and build on to that base every day. She specifically remembered her
decision to train for an Ironman – she had to start at mile one, eventually
building up to mile 140.6.
Throughout this trying time, Allen’s children and supportive husband, Ben,
allowed her to remain positive. When she was re-learning how to walk, her
children would again cheer, “Go mommy.” As she was getting stronger and
beginning to ride her again, they would cheer, “Go mommy!” Allen was
motivated to get better for her children, to be a good mom for them, to be
healthy for them and to be able to do all the things they wanted to do.
Allen got into triathlon racing after she and Ben had moved to Evergreen,
Colorado. As a way to meet people, she started volunteering at the day care
center in her local gym, and she was given a free membership. Allen soon
began to fall in love with exercise, and not long after, she began
participating in running races. Like so many triathletes, knee pain caused
Allen to switch from running to biking, and a friend suggested she train for
triathlon.
In June 2002, when she was six weeks pregnant with her fourth child, she
competed in her first triathlon. Allen placed fifth in her age group, and
following the birth of her daughter, she started training again. She found
that her early morning training provided much-needed personal time, which
was beneficial for both herself and her family. Having her children at the
races cheering, “Go mommy!” encouraged her more than anything. Allen’s
dedication to training paid off and she began to place in the events she was
competing in. She won Denver’s Tri for the Cure in 2006, an event with
nearly 3,000 female participants. Allen’s performance qualified her for the
U.S. team competing at the ITU World Championships, held in Switzerland,
where she finished 13th in her division. In 2006, she participated at Ford
Ironman Florida, finishing her first Ironman event in 11:57:58. In 2007, she
again qualified for the U.S. ITU team and was the top 35- to 39-year-old
female in the 5430 Sports Boulder triathlon series.
Those cheers from her kids helped. Just a year after the accident, she was
back to racing. Last year, Allen earned a sixth-place finish in her age
group at the Gold Coast ITU Triathlon World Championships, setting a new
personal best in the Olympic distance. In November, the woman who was told
she would never walk again finished Ford Ironman Arizona in her best time to
date, 11:18:09.
Last October, Allen took her determined, excited and positive attitude to
Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, for the 2010 Ford Ironman World Championship. Watch her

我是晚上下雨在学校里骑公路车，路灯不是很清楚，然后宿舍楼边上有个超级下坡。。
。

翻在路边，晕过去大半个小时都没人发现。终于有车路过看见他，打了911被救护车送
去了医院。摔掉了N颗牙，摔断了一条胳膊，还摔断了N跟肋骨，其它的外伤就不用提了
。那个惨哟！
不过他这事故是完全可以避免的，如果他不在半夜骑没刹菜车的话。

夜晚行车，车灯和high-viz一定要有！
对自己也对别人负责。
头盔平时带起来累赘，可是真的出了问题，还是很重要的。
我曾经懒惰没有带头盔，结果就摔了，虽然龟速，但是还是差点儿脑震荡（或者已经轻
微脑震荡了）。。。
而且，头盔如果摔过一次，即使表面看起来完好，也一定要换！
