It seems that David Deak already has given up on KQ. Here is what he said in
the race report of IM Arizona. No matter what he is a great person from
many levels.

Qualifying for Kona is a different game now
Qualifying slots for the Ironman World Championships are more inaccessible
than ever. There are 1800 slots available per year. More and more Ironman
races are in the series, so slots are being diluted per race. Instead of
what used to be 65 or 75 slots available in a given race, there are now 40
or 50 slots. Furthermore, I have noticed that the qualifying times have
dropped dramatically in the last two years; by as much as 20 minutes or more
in my age group.
So top-performing non-professionals are discovering ways to get faster and
faster, at a pace I have not been able to keep up with this year. This is
despite me having more time this year than ever for training. Granted, I
have been plagued by knee issues that hold me back, and strained my body
through 3 Ironman races within 6 months, without much recovery in between
races. So I won’t be too hard on myself.
In any case, what seemed like an attainable goal just two years ago now
appears to be more out of reach than ever. The qualifying times have gotten
quicker, by as much as I have gotten slower this year. To qualify now, I not
only have to break the sub-10 hour barrier, which I have yet to do, I have
to push the impossible 9 hour limit. I simply do not have such abilities.
Will this stop me from doing more Ironman distance races? Most certainly not
! However, in order to keep me from going loony (I was once told that all
Ironmen/women are a bit loony), I shall let go of my dreams of Hawaii. The
stress, pressure, and attention taken away from other important things in
life are not worth it. It is more important to focus on actually enjoying
each race for what it is; a glorious day for a swim, bike, and run.
I have three more big ones planned for next year. Watch out!
