,离开主的面和祂权能的荣光,受永远毁灭的刑罚(太25:31-46;罗2:5-6;9:22-23;

CHAPTER XXXIII
Of the Last Judgment
I. God hath appointed a day, wherein he will judge the world, in righteousne
ss, by Jesus Christ,[573] to whom all power and judgment is given of the Fat
her.[574] In which day, not only the apostate angels shall be judged,[575] b
ut likewise all persons that have lived upon earth shall appear before the t
ribunal of Christ, to give an account of their thoughts, words, and deeds; a
nd to receive according to what they have done in the body, whether good or
evil.[576]
II. The end of God’s appointing this day is for the manifestation of the gl
ory of his mercy, in the eternal salvation of the elect; and of his justice,
in the damnation of the reprobate, who are wicked and disobedient. For then
shall the righteous go into everlasting life, and receive that fullness of
joy and refreshing, which shall come from the presence of the Lord; but the
wicked who know not God, and obey not the gospel of Jesus Christ, shall be c
ast into eternal torments, and be punished with everlasting destruction from
the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power.[577]
III. As Christ would have us to be certainly persuaded that there shall be a
day of judgment, both to deter all men from sin; and for the greater consol
ation of the godly in their adversity:[578] so will he have that day unknown
to men, that they may shake off all carnal security, and be always watchful
, because they know not at what hour the Lord will come; and may be ever pre
pared to say, Come Lord Jesus, come quickly, Amen.[579]
Finis.
[573] Acts 17:31. Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judg
e the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he h
ath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.
[574] John 5:22, 27. For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all j
udgment unto the Son.... And hath given him authority to execute judgment al
so, because he is the Son of man.
[575] 1 Corinthians 6:3. Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much mo
re things that pertain to this life? Jude 6. And the angels which kept not t
heir first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everla
sting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. 2 Peter 2:4.
For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, a
nd delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment.
[576] 2 Corinthians 5:10. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of
Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according t
o that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. Ecclesiastes 12:14. For God
shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be
good, or whether it be evil. Romans 2:16. In the day when God shall judge t
he secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel. Romans 14:10, 12.
But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brot
her? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.... So then e
very one of us shall give account of himself to God. Matthew 12:36-37. But I
say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give ac
count thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justifi
ed, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.
[577] Matthew 25:31-46. When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all
the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: A
nd before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one
from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats: And he shall
set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the K
ing say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit
the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: For I was an
hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a s
tranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye vis
ited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answ
er him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty,
and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or nake
d, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto t
hee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Ina
smuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have
done it unto me. Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart
from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his an
gels: For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye ga
ve me no drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye cloth
ed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. Then shall they also
answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stra
nger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? Then
shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it n
ot to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me. And these shall go awa
y into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. Romans 2
:5-6. But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself
wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of
God; Who will render to every man according to his deeds: Romans 9:22-23. Wh
at if God, willing to show his wrath, and to make his power known, endured w
ith much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: And that
he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which h
e had afore prepared unto glory. Matthew 5:21. His lord said unto him, Well
done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few thi
ngs, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy
lord. Acts 3:19. Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may
be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of
the Lord; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-10. And to you who are troubled rest with us,
when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, I
n flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not
the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting
destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;
When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all
them that believe(because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.
[578] 2 Peter 3:11, 14. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved
, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godline
ss.... Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent
that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless. 2 Corinth
ians 5:10-11. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; tha
t every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he ha
th done, whether it be good or bad. Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord
, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are m
ade manifest in your consciences. 2 Thessalonians 1:5-7. Which is a manifest
token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of th
e kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer: Seeing it is a righteous thing w
ith God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; And to you who a
re troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven
with his mighty angels. Luke 21:7, 28. And they asked him, saying, Master, b
ut when shall these things be? and what sign will there be when these things
shall come to pass?... And when these things begin to come to pass, then lo
ok up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh. Romans 8:23
-25. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of th
e Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption
, to wit, the redemption of our body. For we are saved by hope: but hope tha
t is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But i
f we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.
[579] Matthew 24:36, 42-44. But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not
the angels of heaven, but my Father only.... Watch therefore: for ye know n
ot what hour your Lord doth come. But know this, that if the goodman of the
house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, a
nd would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore be ye also r
eady: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh. Mark 13:35-
37. Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh,
at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: Lest com
ing suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you I say unto all, W
atch. Luke 12:35-36. Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning
; And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will ret
urn from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they say open unto h
im immediately. Revelation 22:20. He which testifieth these things saith, Su
rely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
