统。底层海水的流动被称之为洋流。直到二十世纪，人们仍认为海洋深处没有洋流存在
。后经一系列研究，证实南大西洋海底有洋流存在。但因缺乏直接证据，仍被怀疑。六
十年代中期，科学家们借助于现代摄影技术，发现海洋深处有涟漪和被冲刷的现象；透
过涟漪，观察到洋流冲击海底沉积物的现象，海底洋流的存在才被最终证实。
美国科学家毛瑞（Matthew Fontaine Maury）是海洋航道的发现者。他从航海志中
详细研究海上的风向和洋流情况，从中归纳出横渡大西洋的理想航道，成为日后国际公
认的航道的基础。毛瑞所著的《海洋物理学》仍是当今研究季风与洋流相互关系的基本
教科书之一。是他第一个指出，由于季风和洋流的相互作用，使海洋成为循环不息的系
统。
富有启迪意义的是，毛瑞关于海洋航道的灵感是来自《圣经》的启示。有关毛瑞生
平的书中记载了这样一件事。一次毛瑞卧病在床，每天晚上由他儿子读《圣经》给他听
。有天晚上当他儿子读到诗篇八第8节，“海里的鱼，凡经行海道的，都服在他的脚下
”时，他猛然联想到海底航道问题。他说：“如果上帝说大海中有航道存在，那么我病
愈后，一定要把它们找出来。”毛瑞于1873年去世。毛瑞的故乡维吉尼亚州于 1923年
在首府Richmond为他建立纪念碑，碑文载明毛瑞的灵感源于《圣经》。 | G******e

Matthew Fontaine Maury (January 14, 1806 -- February 1, 1873), United States
Navy was an American astronomer, historian, oceanographer, meteorologist,
cartographer, author, geologist, and educator. He was nicknamed "Pathfinder
of the Seas" and "Father of Modern Oceanography and Naval Meteorology" and
later, "Scientist of the Seas," due to the publication of his extensive
works in his books, especially Physical Geography of the Sea (1855), the
first extensive and comprehensive book on oceanography to be published.
Maury made many important new contributions to charting winds and ocean
currents, including ocean lanes for passing ships at sea. In 1825 at age 19,
Maury joined the United States Navy as a midshipman on board the frigate
USS Brandywine. Almost immediately he began to study the seas and record
methods of navigation. When a leg injury left him unfit for sea duty, Maury
devoted his time to the study of navigation, meteorology, winds, and
currents. His hard work on and love of plotting the oceans paid off when he
became Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Observatory and head of the Depot of
Charts and Instruments. Here, Maury studied thousands of ships' logs and
charts. He published the Wind and Current Chart of the North Atlantic, which
showed sailors how to use the ocean's currents and winds to their advantage
and drastically reduced the length of ocean voyages. Maury's uniform system
of recording oceanographic data was adopted by navies and merchant marines
around the world and was used to develop charts for all the major trade
routes. With the outbreak of the Civil War, Maury, a Virginian, resigned his
commission as a U.S. Navy commander and joined the Confederacy. He spent
the war in the South, as well as abroad in Great Britain, acquiring ships
for the Confederacy. Following the war, Maury accepted a teaching position
at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. He died at his
home in Lexington in 1873 after completing an exhausting national lecture
tour.
