candidates. However, it turned out to be a very close fight. John Kerry
wasted too much effort in PA, and lost in OH with a less than 1% margin.
John Kerry was very weak, and his name recognition was fairly low then.
But the base gradually turned on in the campaign. In a largely partisan
political environment, the most important thing is to get the base out to
vote. The so called middle is very narrow and random, otherwise they will
not be called middle.
