The U.S. government appears on pace to hit the $16.394 trillion federal
borrowing limit sometime in January, a bit later than the Obama
administration had initially projected, according to recent data.
The Treasury Department reported on Friday that the government actually ran
a surplus of $75 billion in September, meaning it brought in more money than
it spent, a rarity these days. That means the government has averaged a $90
.8 billion monthly deficit over the past 12 months.
With $16.119 trillion in debt as of Oct. 11, the government is $275 billion
under its borrowing limit. That puts in on pace to hit the limit in mid-
January.
A Treasury Department spokesman declined to comment and would not say
whether the administration is changing its forecast.
Such estimates can fluctuate wildly, in part because monthly deficits vary
based in part on how much tax revenue is paid into the government. Also,
very large and periodic Social Security and Medicare payments can make some
months more expensive than others. And the Treasury Department doesn’t
traditionally wait until the last minute to begin its emergency measures to
avoid hitting the debt ceiling, so they might decide to take action sooner.
Last month, federal data showed the government poised to hit the debt
ceiling in late December, but the unexpected surplus in September altered
the math. (It was just the second monthly surplus since 2008).
Once the government nears the debt ceiling, the Treasury Department can
enact emergency measures to buy more time to avoid defaulting on government
obligations. Last year, the government came close to hitting the debt
ceiling on May 16, and then Treasury moved to buy more wiggle room until
early August. If similar moves are used in early 2013, the government could
likely stretch back the date until sometime around March.
The government currently spends more money than it brings in through revenue
, which is why the government has a deficit and a growing debt. There is
also a limit on how high the debt can be, and once the government reaches
this limit it is much more difficult for it to borrow money. The limit is
traditionally raised by Congress, often with handwringing, but Democrats and
Republicans are sharply at odds this time about what conditions to place on
raising the debt ceiling.
Moving back the date of when the government might hit the debt ceiling could
have a number of consequences. Political negotiations to raise the federal
borrowing limit are expected to begin after the November elections and take
place as part of broader discussions aimed at avoiding large tax increases
and spending cuts that begin Jan. 2, 2013 unless Congress intervenes. If the
debt ceiling issue can be postponed until the spring,
Two top Senate Republicans on Monday pressed the Treasury Department for
more information about when the U.S. government could hit the debt ceiling
and what the Obama administration’s plans would be if it no longer had the
power to borrow more money.
The letter, from Sen. Jeff Sessions (R., Ala.) and Orrin Hatch (R., Utah)
asks Treasury when the government might begin using emergency measures to
avoid hitting the debt ceiling, when the government might ultimately hit the
debt ceiling, what assets the government might sell to avoid hitting the
debt ceiling, among other things. |

“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is
a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t
pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial
assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless
fiscal policies. … Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and
internationally. Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here. Instead,
Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our
children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of
leadership. Americans deserve better.” |

So don't complain if we keep continue piling up the debt.
To be serous, GOP can propose something like "we agree to cut 20%
military spending and you agree to cut 40% of the welfare spending"
At least you can get the cutting started and people would consider you
serious about cutting spending.

largely from its most powerful military force. Without that, all other
things are just BS cuz no othre country will give US a shit, just taking
China and Iran as an example.
So military spending is not for certain people's interest. It's for whole
country's interest. It's for national interest.
