For those of you who know me solely through LinkedIn and business, you are
unlikely to know of the other hat I occasionally wear as my family's
archivist, historian, and spokesperson.
To get you in the loop: the maternal side of my family were prominent
filmmakers, and it is safe to say that my great-uncle Louis B. Mayer, who co
-founded M-G-M and in 1926 conceived of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts
and Sciences (aka 'the Academy'), really helped to create Hollywood and the
film industry.
This afternoon I'll be speaking with ABC Radio's Laura Tchilinguirian about
how the #OscarsSoWhite campaign was hijacked away from the very issue it was
supposed to address: diversity.
And, sadly, so did today's telecast of the Oscars ceremony.
Instead, the earlier debate, and Chris Rock's monologue and much of the
Oscars, made this a 'black issue', when really it should have been about all
minorities who are struggling to find a foothold in the film business. In
fact, black actors and filmmakers have made huge strides in the industry
with a significant list of noms and wins for lead and supporting roles, as
well as for non-acting Academy Award categories.
Hopefully, these gains will continue next Oscar season. But think about it:
when was the last time you saw other minorities in a lead or key supporting
role in a major Hollywood film? And in this case, the situation is black or
white, as key roles rarely go to say, a Mexican- or Asian-American.

Unfortunately, a handful of loud voices monopolized #OscarsSoWhite and
stifled what could have become a rallying call for all people of colour and
different backgrounds, as well as for gay, transgender, disabled, and older
actors and filmmakers. That's actually what diversity should be about.
So it was disturbing that AMPAS leadership, led by its first black CEO
Cheryl Boone Isaacs, decided to eliminate lifetime voting rights. It seems
impossible that such a smart, sophisticated, and liberally-minded group of
people completely missed that this would mean discriminating against older
actors and filmmakers. Several penned editorials to express their shock that
the very people who have the most experience and perspective would be the
first to be jettisoned.
My grandfather and others in my family were lifetime AMPAS members, and I
experienced first-hand just how seriously they took their voting rights. In
fact, the issue is really not for the Academy to solve on its own - the film
industry as a whole needs to tackle this, but so does the business world
more generally. The ongoing lack of gender and racial diversity in
boardrooms is just one example.
Let's hope that at the very least, the #OscarsSoWhite controversy will
result in acknowledgement from studio execs, producers, screenwriters,
directors, casting directors, and others that today's audiences are not just
white or black, young, beautiful, straight, and able-bodied.
Next year, let's hope we see #OscarsSoEverybody or better yet, #
OscarsSoDiverse... |
