As a political disadvantageous minority, Asian Americans face long time
racial prejudice and discrimination. More than 150 years ago, the first
generation of Asian immigrants first came to the U.S. mainly as low-skilled
male laborers who mined, farmed and built the railroads. They endured
generations of legal racial discrimination—including laws passed that
prohibited the immigration of Asian women. The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882
, barred all new immigration from China.
In two separate cases (Takao Ozawa v. U.S., 260 U.S. 178 1922; United States
v. Bhagat Singh Thind, 261 U.S. 204 1923), the U.S. Supreme Court ruled
that Asians were neither white nor Caucasian, and thus could not gain
citizenship through naturalization. The Immigration Act of 1917 and the
National Origins Act of 1924, extended the immigration ban to virtually all
parts of Asia. During the World War II, the forced relocation and internment
of about 120,000 Japanese Americans after the Pearl Harbor Attack in 1941
was implemented by the U.S. Government and upheld by the Supreme Court.
The immigration from Asia did not resume until after the Congress passed
the landmark Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965. By law, Asian
Americans from various national origins were politically disenfranchised
until the second half of the twentieth century. |
