In 1972, the editor of The Baseball Research Journal published by the
Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) noted that if the American
League team won the World Series, a Republican won the election, and if the
National League won, a Democrat did. His findings were based on the election
results between the years 1952 and 1968. That was the golden age of
baseball.
Then forty years later, a couple of SABR member stats-nerds decided to
expand the data set to cover the years 1908 to 2008 and asked, could the
winners of the World Series really predict who won the Presidential election?
And of course the answer was no.
Of 27 elections held between 1908 and 2012, there has been a correlation
between the World Series winner and the presidential winner 16 times (59%).
Statistically speaking, that’s more of a coincidence. It’s about the same
correlation between a player growing a playoff beard and winning a
championship. (Did you notice? How can you not? Every player does it now, on
every team, in every sport. And exactly half of them lose. The trend is
