Police warn about growing number of Honda thefts
KSL SALT LAKE CITY
The Salt Lake City Police Department issued a warning to owners of older
Hondas of all makes and models to take precautions due to the large number
of such vehicles stolen since the first of the year.
Since January 1, the SLCPD Auto Theft Unit reports more than 450 cases of
theft and recovery of 1990-2000 model-year Hondas.
"Many of these vehicles are simply taken for transportation because someone
has figured out a way to alter keys," said Sgt. Stefhan Bennett, who
commands the Auto Theft Unit.
"Since the vehicles are not stripped, just dumped, we figure they're taking
them because they can," Bennett said. "While it may be a small inconvenience
, we suggest using a steering wheel locking device, which oftentimes deters
a car thief."
The Auto Theft Unit has also recovered 125 Hondas within the city that were
stolen from surrounding jurisdictions since the beginning of the year,
Bennett noted.
Regardless of make or model, SLCPD encourages vehicle owners to take
preventive measures to deter car thieves, including the following measures:
•Do not leave your keys in your car
•Do not leave your vehicle unattended while it's running
•Remove valuables or store them out of sight
•Roll up the windows and lock the doors
•Park in well-lighted areas
•Use an anti-theft device or car alarm

后很多都是被拆成零件卖了，卖零件比卖整车更赚钱。

Salt Lake City police warned Hondas are increasingly the target of thieves.
It didn't take long for an officer in neighboring South Salt Lake to spot a
bunch of the stolen cars.
South Salt Lake police noticed several Honda vehicles at the Days Inn Motel
on 315 West 3300 South that all had temporary tags. They checked the VIN
numbers and discovered that the five Hondas were listed as stolen.
Police say they set up surveillance on the five vehicles and waited for
someone to return to them. Kenneth Harley King, 27, from Magna, Utah,
entered one of the cars. Michael Lowell Gillespie, 18, then walked up to
King and started talking to them.
Officers then moved in on the two suspects and arrested King. Gillespie
tried to run away but was quickly caught.
With those two suspects in custody, police turned their attention to the
hotel room connected with the vehicles. After staking out the hotel room,
police say they apprehended six more suspects, three males, two females, and
one female minor.
The minor was released to the JRC and was not charged at this time. South
Salt Lake police spokesman Gary Keller says officers staked out a room,
ultimately arresting and booking four people on suspicion of felony auto
theft .
Luis Alredo Garcia, 21, from Ogden, and Lacey Judea Ramirez, 25, from Salt
Lake City were also arrested.
The remaining suspects were released. The suspects have not yet been
formally charged. | h**l
