China Automotive 4Q Revenue Tops Street; Restatements On Track

China Automotive Systems Inc.'s (CAAS) fourth-quarter revenue easily topped
analysts' views, while its revenue outlook for the current year also edged
Wall Street estimates.
Shares were up 8.9% at $8.92 in early trading. The stock is down 58% in the
past year.
The power steering components and systems supplier to the Chinese automotive
industry said revenue increased 20% to $100.5 million. Analysts polled by
Thomson Reuters most recently expected $90 million.
Chairman Hanlin Chen said the company expects 2011 revenue growth of about
20%. Analysts recently expected 19% revenue growth to $399 million.
The company also said it has made "solid progress" addressing accounting
errors related to its convertible notes issued in February and continues to
expect to complete the restatement of financial statements for 2009 and the
first three quarters of 2010 during the current quarter. The company said
the accounting issues are noncash in nature and don't affect the company's
performance.
The company also reported that operating income more than doubled to $12.3
million amid lower expenses, though gross margin fell to 19.7% from 21.8%.
The company said margins typically decline in the period owing to increased
warranty expense.
China Automotive in March was notified by the Nasdaq Stock Market that it
was out of compliance with stock market rules, which require timely filing
of financial reports.
