LCC DAL ER not good, but up. FT.
US Airways 1Q Loss Widens On Higher Fuel Costs, Prior-Year Gain
1 hours 19 minutes ago - DJNF
DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
US Airways Group Inc.'s (LCC) first-quarter loss widened on higher fuel
prices and a prior-year gain, although revenue grew on higher traffic and a
series of fare increases that were enacted within a strong demand
environment.
Shares rose 1.2% to $8.38 in recent premarket trading as results topped
analysts' expectations. Still, the stock is down 17% this year through
Monday's close.
Like many of its peers, US Airways has reported higher traffic for several
months, as the industry benefits from a rebound in air travel and the
economy recovers. However, US Airways, which operates a mostly domestic
network, should see the most direct impact from the rising cost of jet fuel
as it has no hedges in place.
US Airways reported a loss of $114 million, or 71 cents a share, compared
with a prior-year loss of $45 million, or 28 cents a share. Excluding
charges in the latest quarter and a prior-year gain on the sale of
investments in auction-rate securities, the loss widened to 68 cents a share
from 55 cents. Revenue grew 12% to $2.96 billion.
Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expected a per-share loss of 72 cents
on revenue of $2.94 billion.
Companywide, passenger revenue per available seat mile, a key performance
metric for airlines, climbed 8.7%. Average fuel costs, meanwhile, jumped
about 32%.
Traffic climbed 4.5% as capacity rose 3.4%. Load factor, the percentage of
available seats filled, grew to 78% from 77.2%.
Meanwhile, US Airways is seeking hundreds of millions of dollars in damages
from Sabre Holdings Corp. after launching an antitrust suit against the
travel-services provider last week, alleging Sabre uses exclusionary tactics
to shut out competition. Sabre, which runs the largest U.S. global
distribution system, on Friday said it would aggressively defend itself
against the allegations.

Delta 1Q Loss Widens On Higher Fuel Prices But Results Top Street
2 hours 42 minutes ago - DJNF
DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
Delta Air Lines Inc.'s (DAL) first-quarter loss widened as the company's
results were stung by higher fuel prices, although the loss was less than
analysts feared due to stronger-than-expected top line growth.
Shares rose 2.3% to $9.21 in premarket trading.
Delta reported higher traffic during the first three months of 2011, helped
by stronger international results, as demand for air travel continues to
rebound from the recession. However, the company last month said it had
abandoned plans to boost capacity this year, instead expecting to cut it by
2% from 2010 levels as it absorbs rising fuel costs and the Japan crisis
weighs on results.
Chief Executive Richard Anderson said fuel was "the biggest challenge facing
this industry and Delta is actively reducing capacity, implementing fare
actions, hedging our fuel needs and attacking our cost structure in order to
offset fuel's impact on our earnings."
In the latest quarter, Delta posted a loss of $318 million, or 38 cents a
share, compared with a prior-year loss of $256 million, or 31 cents a share.
Revenue jumped 13% to $7.75 billion.
Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected a loss of 50 cents on revenue of
$7.61 billion.
Passenger revenue grew 13%, while passenger revenue per available seat mile,
an important revenue gauge for airlines, increased 7.3%. Other revenue
climbed 6% due to higher revenue from its frequent flier program and other
services.
Delta said passenger revenue was impacted by $90 million and $35 million by
severe winter weather and events in Japan, respectively.
Load factor, or the percentage of available seats filled, decreased to 76.4%
from 79.5%. Capacity grew 5%.
Delta's fuel price per gallon jumped 30%, net of hedging.
President Ed Bastian said the company currently expects double-digit revenue
growth for the second quarter. Analysts most recently expected revenue of $
8.8 million, or up 8%.
