I got my training back in Taiwan for humans, which I used numerous times
there; never mouth-to-mouth, though. I simply can not bring myself to do
that on humans, let alone on animals. (I have not had pets for decades. Pets
died quickly in my childhood, due to neglect or ignorance. I always feel
guilty about it.)

experience.
But I read compression is way more important than giving breaths. So at
least you can try compression on pets if mouth-to-mouth breathing is not
acceptable. Or you can get a barrier device like face shield or mask.
Sometimes you can even try napkins.

It is true. Please read
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardiopulmonary_resuscitation
(section 2.2 Compression-only resuscitation/cardiocerebral resuscitation (
CCR))
We learned of that in Taiwan back in 1970s, 1980s. No physicians I knew of
did mouth-to-mouth ventilation. And chest compression alone by myself alone
saved several.
