的坚强大妈,好像她天生就是个animal rescuer似的。。
今天在facebook上看到她的一篇关于她刚刚过世的猫猫的文章,眼睛湿湿的,而她在我
的心里,也终于变成了一个活生生有血有肉的人。。
My Maggie
It was May 22, 1999. We were set up to do adoptions of kittens in front of
the local supermarket. Anne called. A young boy approached her with two
three-day old kittens in a small garbage pail. He found them and knew she
worked with homeless cats. She told him she couldn't take them. He dropped
the pail and left. She was going to take them to the vet to be euthanized. I
asked her to wait while I called my John. He said, "sure, bring them home."
That was the beginning of an amazing relationship. I was virtually a virgin
at animal rescue and definitely a virgin at raising tiny little bottle
babies. Pipp and Maggie became my very first! I was oh-so-diligent about
everything with them. I still have the legal pad with how much they ate at
each feeding and what time, their weight, etc. The vet told me the mortality
rate for kittens this young was extremely high and I shouldn't be too
optimistic; he would be surprised if they lasted six days. Well, when we
passed that milestone, he upped the goal to six weeks. When we passed that
milestone - six months. So, at six months, I asked him if six years was the
new goal. That was over 14 years ago.
Maggie was my soulmate. I have a photo album that is full from just the
first six months of their lives. I could deny them nothing. If Maggie wanted
to snuggle with me, she would climb on me while I sat at my desk and I was
compelled to go lie down with her so she could knead my neck and push her
mouth against mine until she tired of that and curled up in my arms. Pipp
would do the same, but he was never as demanding as my moody princess. He
would curl up and suck his thumb! They taught me so much.
We went through a lot together; from being a few cats to so many little
lives passing through our doors. For the first 13 years of her life, Maggie
was one of the sturdiest cats ever - she was at the vet only twice in all of
those years and one of the visits was to be spayed. In the last year,
however, her health deteriorated on so many levels. She was not the
contented cat I had shared my life with. One health issue after another
popped up. She was miserable. Finally, yesterday, I did the kindest thing I
could for my soulmate. I already miss her so much. I had missed the sturdy
Maggilicious that grew up in my arms for the past few months. And now,
knowing I will never hold her again, the sorrow is just unbearable.
Maggie, I'm sorry I let you down. I'm sorry you couldn't stay with me
forever. I don't want to live forever, but I wanted you to be with me until
the very end. Rest in peace my sweet princess.

其实大多animal rescuer都有一颗温柔的心,但是他们又必须坚强,否则真是会伤心死
气死。。
