if you want to be an chief actuary in China according to recent regulations
you should pass one law exam, do not need to have the chinese actuarial
certificate.
However, at the time when you come back to China, maybe it will need Chinese
actuary certificate to be the chief.The regulations change frequently,and CIRC pay more attention to the Chinese exams these days.

certificate is really important.
Since others may think you are not diligent or smart or professional if you
have many working experience but do not have the FSA.
At least should be an ASA, hehe
In actuarial department of Ping An, it is forced you to pass at least one
exam per one or two years. |

a master in communication from a school that has actuarial program, so that
you can utilize the on-campus actuarial recruiting while studying in
communication. This will also provide you with some really good
opportunities to 1. distinguish yourself from others during the interview (
with your communication master) and 2. to show your initiatives to improve/ |

关学位和考试加绿卡，找工作肯定没问题。
三，找到了会不会让自己满意 （这个最担心）--这个问题是小马过河，没人能回答，
呵呵。你可以看看这两本书，Actuarial survival guide和Vault Guide to Actuarial

modeling is better. AIR, RMS, EQE models are all garbage if you know what
exactly they are doing internally.
if you are a student track actuary, you may not want to pursue a cat
modeling career. and companies ususally don't recruit actuaries to do cat
modeling - totally different skill sets. cat modeling requires sql
operating and programming the most; and other data handling skills.

individual products) a couple month ago. Blue shield seems to have some sort
of consultant opening too. HN had an Associate III position 9 months ago.
BTW, I just checked Blue Shield, they have Actuarial Analyst I and
Intermediate Actuarial Analyst openings in SF now. Not sure if lz is only looking for entry level. That could be much harder. |

investment consultant. In my company,a lot of poeple change from DB to DC
side.
If most companies do finish up converting to Defined Contributions Schemes,
will there not still be a demand for actuaries, or do DC schemes require far
less actuarial involvement than DB schemes? |

interview, their coordinator of actuarial dept recruitment told me they have
6 (SIX) openings for entry-level actuarial analyst position.
Judging from their actuaries' names on SOA directory, however, it seems to me they
don't sponsor H1-B, as I only found one name which looks like Chinese.

the same especially from my point of view, those are all back-office works.
product development is very different from valuation.
Somebody may argue that a portfolio manager is also about investment and an
actuary can become a portfolio manager. But that is not what I mean of
actuarial work.
My suggestion, go to consulting if you feel your are bored. |

boss in my first internship told me that CEO of Hanover Re is an actuary. It
should be a nice company for the actuarial carrer.
For the phone screening,if it is conducted by HR, then it will focus on your
resume and they might ask some boring behavior questions. If you will be
interviewed by an actuary, you should prepare some examples from your past
working experience that can be fit for their need.

order you want. But I think this is a reasonable order.
If you know master-level math, you can breeze through all preliminary exams.
Just study manuals. I don't think you even need to read the recommended
textbook for preliminary exams. But actuarial science is not just math.
All the math majors I know (a very biased and limited sample) never failed
any exams. In a period of 4 years, I did a Ph.D. in pure math from a

左右要大一些，但是还是要以 actuary 的定价作为基准。personal
lines就更不用说了，基本上actuarial rating plan出来之后，underwriter
就是执行。我说这个没有瞧不起underwriter的意思，相反我和他们工作
过程中学到很多东西。但是pricing，用你的例子来说就是某个特定的人（或者
说，某一群特定的人）向池子里丢多少钱，从根上说我认为是actuary的工作。
同理，如果你的driving record是3，你accident benefit的DR differential
就是 1.0，这些核心的rating 不是underwriter决定的，他们只是贯彻这个
risk符合其他underwriting rules并确保这个risk 拿到它的rate/premium。
life insurance的复杂产品我了解不多。但是我觉得普通的product，underwriter

If you want to have a good chance of getting a job after your master degree,
I give you 2 school suggestions (talking about NYC only):
1. Columbia's actuarial master program.
2. Baruch College's accounting master program.
From what I see, the chance of finding a job is about the same after
graduation (if you need sponsorship) . Actuarial science maybe earn you 5k

pricing group有一个空缺,immediate hire,必须能在一个月内开始，H1B可以办的，但
如果有OPT就最好，不然可能要自己pay 加急的钱。这个空缺会是顶替我现在的
replacement,因为我要move 到西部的office去，11月走。老板说我走之前要先把新人
train 好，所以找人很急。有大量的SAS programming, 还有predictive modeling的东
西，要求SAS和Excel一定要好，能马上开始工作，不需要重新学SAS的，考试1门就行。
下面是我之前的job description,仅供参考。关键还是能马上开始，还有SAS要强。

算无关，主要经历就是research和助教。今年第三年，因为各种原因转成master，五月
份毕业。一个礼拜前刚考过p/1, 六月份考fm/2，然后开始opt。
其实从今年一月份就开始在网上投quant analyst的工作，可是除了两个电话面试后被
据外没有一点消息。非常灰心，但也不觉得意外，毕竟自己全无金融背景。上周考过p/
1后，准备专心找精算工作，在网上投了20个左右的entry－level和actuarial student
的工作，但也看到很多人都说初级的工作非常不乐观，忽然意识到不能再这样闷头投简
历了。翻了很多版上的老文章和actuary outpost上的帖子，感觉还是要多和大家交流
，希望能多听听前辈的一些经验和建议。谢谢。
我真心希望自己能坚持在美国考完asa，大概要两年时间吧，其实暂时不解决h1b，我可
以接受，只是希望在opt后90天内能有个工作，让我可以继续留在美国边工作边考试。

important skillsets (not in any particular order): reading, writing,
logical reasoning, math, science, people skills.... basically all the skills
he/she is learning in school.
a bit too early to focus on 精算 itself. but if he/she is sure that this is
what he/she wants（NOT influenced by parents or other adults) , then you
could try to find a mentor for him/her - an actuary that can be his/per pen

would like to caution you against losing sight of other VERY important
skills like basic reading, writing and social skills in general.
Although a necessary part of of being an actuary, passing actuarial exams
quickly doesn't guarantee a successful actuarial career. I have seen a lot
of fast track exam passers that flew through exams, but face difficulty in

predictive modeling deals with what the theoretical answer should be.
Actuaries have to use their business judgement and figure out what the best
solution for the real life business problem is.
I don't see actuarial capabilties be replaced by modeling completely... we
are a long way away from using statistical models to predict the real world
accurately....
however, predictive modeling is a skill that newer actuaries should master.

assistant actuary, associate actuary之类的，想问一下，在保险公司要往上走的话
是不是就应该走考精算师这条路？以前没想过做精算，我是从phd转industry的，碰巧
进了保险公司，看了一下发现精算师是个很好的行业，我也想自己有一个明确的career
path，所以想是不是该走这条路了。但是老板招我的时候说他手下还有一个actuary
student，是每三个月rotate的，而我是个相对permanent的member，那他是不是不期望
我会走这条路的呢？如果不考精算还有没有上升的空间呢？不知道精算师的这些title
（assistant, associate, senior..)跟在公司的实际职位级别是否直接相关呢？（比
如是不是 associate 管着一堆assistant，senior管着一堆associate之类的）。
问题有点多，估计比较无知，希望有好心人能指点一下，谢谢！ |

opportunities, I would say Dallas > San Antonio > Houston. The only good
insurance company I know is USAA in SA, but on the down side you have to
make a long term commitment at one company.
Houston has a few consulting firms but mostly in pension from what I
remember...a good way to find it out is to go to soa.com and search for
actuaries in Houston area.
