school (regardless of whether the school is in CA itself or not), then you'
ll have significantly increased your chance of getting an actuarial job in
CA. Otherwise, it really depends........ most entry level actuarial

about citizenship, I wonder if its a good alternative to apply those jobs.

还有一段时间，我们region的actuarial vp是underwritring出身的。有精算
背景的老板在技术上有一定的优势。但是只要老板能够appreciate你的工作
并且了解并支持你的工作，应该也不是大问题。特别是你越往上走，report给
actuary的机会一般来说就越小。
话说回来，对于entry level来说，report给技术上对口的老板还是更好的。
说这个不是给frank兄弟抬杠，别介意 =) |

since I heard CAS is easier than SOA given the fact that CAS credits all
preliminary exams of SOA, but not vice versa.
Anyway, exams shouldn't be a huge problem here. The key is whether you like
to be an actuary or not or how much you like to be an actuary as to start
over. |

pursue Actuarial career 1.5 years ago.
Since I found no "pure" graduate program in
Actuarial Science around southern Cal., I went
to eastern coast to pursue my MS degree.
As an international student, I was very lucky
to have a job offer before I graduated. The only
concern was the location; it is in NY.
Since I didn't want to be apart from my husband,
I decided to turn down the job offer.

你们那里的entry level都做什么性质的工作？是不是帮忙update spreadsheet，从database里pull data吗？这些慢慢在我们公司都automated了，所以现在根本不招没有designation的人了，如果要招至少是associate。

所谓communication skill 就是说话让人舒服 能抓住重点 我觉得多看一些介绍
actuary 的书 多记录一些重点 可能有帮助 面试的时候可以有东西说 呵呵
把自己最大的优势长处整理下 在面试的时候记得说出来 最后人家还是要你干事的 呵

我觉得有statistical research/predictive modeling/data mining的部门的保险公司
并不是很多，主要集中在大的P&C公司。你要找的不应该是actuary，而应该是保险公司
的statistical analyst/predictive modeler。作为stat PhD，显然对于entry level
actuarial student是over qualified了。再说，做精算的才五六万起薪，你一个PhD甘
心么。
有两个intern program是专门面向stat graduate的，all state和travelers的。统计
版上有个牛人oloolo刚从marketing跳到了travelers的modeling，你可以搜搜他的帖子。 |

Your business degree is not a disadvantage. On the other hand, if you can

这是我遇到过的最dynamic的actuary，极为热情的谈了1个小时。面试时不停的给我讲

饭的时候就跟我说他做精算的原因就是看了那个job ranking, actuary是那年的No.1
如果是No.1的话，为什么要做the 2nd best job.
这未必是个good answer in interviews，但是有时这种honesty或者是带点幽默色彩的
回答反而会impress interviwers，特别是当别人都在编故事的时候。 |

underwriter有更大的影响力。这也是reinsurance pricing的困难
和特点所在。但是注意到很多actuary其实在再保公司的role都是
dual capacity。好多reinsurance brokeage公司里面的broker和
managing director也都有actuarial 背景。把两者结合起来是一种
挑战，也是让我非常想尝试的一个path。 |

numbers, and they are easily get bored by doing the same thing. I like
numbers a lot, and enjoy making one thing better and better. Personally

1. usually people start exams in college, with 8+ exams, I suppose finish
with FSA at about 30 yrs old at most?
2. Does FSA require yrs of experience? I looked up salary survey, with 5-9
yrs of experience, the median is around 110k? Is that about right for a 30
yr old FSA?
3. 20 yrs exp, 40 yrs old, got 160k? that does sound very much, comparing
to IT or doctors. Same effort, right? I thought actuary's salary goes up

skills are strong, surely you can get a job. Employers won't deny you just
because you are a Ph.D. But if there are other candidates who are just BA,
but with same level of skills as you, they have a better chance to get a job

to give Ph.Ds interviews unless he or she really stands out. His thought
