我们家弟弟上幼儿园时,有次在家长会和他的老师有过相关的对话。我的关心话题是,
如何不宠溺孩子?老师给我讲了下面一个故事:
她是一个单亲妈妈,一手拉扯大两个孩子。她儿子19岁那年,自己买了辆车。首付是用
自己打工赚来的,贷款需要妈妈共贷。办好手续,母子俩走出贷款办公室时,儿子对她
讲了一句话,我听了顿时眼眶发热:
妈妈,感谢你,感谢我们有贫穷的生活。
因为是单亲,家庭条件不好,妈妈一直努力工作(她真的是一位非常敬业非常好的老师

好像是作者本身吧,小时候爸爸曾经去银行,把他一个月的收入,兑成一块钱,几麻袋
的钱,浩浩荡荡地拿回家,把孩子们瞬间秒杀。然后哗啦啦,把给山姆大叔的税钱,给
划拉走。然后,一步步告诉孩子,这些钱是房子贷款,这些是饭钱,这些是保险。三下
五除二,一堆钱已经所剩无几。这个画面到现在还在他的脑海里

这三个层次,在我看来,就是“修身,齐家,治国”。
我老是nytimes columnist David brooks的“忠实”读者, 常年追随他的文章,
读到很赞的甚至经常email推荐给亲戚朋友。为什么“忠实”画着引号呢? 因为
阅读的同时,一点“防毒”面具,辩证思维还是非常必要的。
他的大多数文章可以说是在推广一种处世原则,鼓励人们吃好,睡好,工作好,
培养靠谱的判断能力,照管自己的生活。总结成一个词就是“individual
responsibility”。这在“修身,齐家”的层次上,可以说是100%的正面意义,
用句韩复渠的名言“兄弟我举双手赞同”。 他的文章提供了一个视角来观察和
理解美国(白人)(upper) middle class的意识形态,对新移民尤其有价值。
