以前有作业给了几个星期时间学生还是交不上来，其实就很说明问题。一学期一共也就
十几周，6个essays平均下来每个只有两星期时间，肯定有不少学生会觉得疲于奔命。
还有就是学生的工作量可以大，但不要头绪太多。你这一学期下来有16-18个

Indeed, there are many Ph.D. programs that can be closed. The first one on
my list to close would be the Religion program in Columbia university. Why
do we need Ph.D.'s specializing in religion? Leave that area to the rabis

我是纯社科人文专业。昨天晚上收到我们系writing center的一封超长的信。反映选我
的GE课上一个学生的问题。说那个学生根本就不具备应付大学课程的英语水平，完成课
上布置的essay作业，完全是利用writing center的TA在给她一句话一句话地写。因为
她根本无法用英文表达自己的意思。而且还跟我说她的essay有抄袭之嫌。弄得我昨晚
上睡觉，做梦都是这件事。 |

得体会。我在essay里教学的部分引用了几句学生的评语，都是从学生反馈里挑的。我
觉得学生评语放在portfolio里没问题，但应该出自学生期末反馈才有说服力，因为是
匿名的。直接向学生要推荐信不合适，因为作为教师你处于authority的位置，向学生
要推荐信会给人以学生迫于压力说好话的感觉。
加一些以前的final或quiz什么的在portfolio里没问题，不过这些东西一般没人会太
care。 |

试，然后Schedule 了两周后的on-site. on-site 前需要写一篇Essay，因为平时要上
班，周五的面试，周二才Submit essay，不知道是不是有点晚了。还有一点奇怪的是他
们的面试Detailed schedule 直到面试当天早上8:30 才Email出来，正个面试从早上9:
45到下午四点，最后要去见HR时他们已经下班了，没来得及填工作申请，他们说可以do
it later. 礼拜一LD发Email索取申请表格被告知没必要，LD就觉得不妙，礼拜二就急
着跟HR询问Feedback 被告知不会给offer. 整个过程感觉他们For some reason 他们在
面试之前就决定不考虑给Offer 了。整个过程没有3rd party recruiter, 是直接work
with their corporate recruiter,所以人家也没说为什么不考虑。大家有什么看法？

碰到公式一定要用语言把它说出来。

这件事的point不是暑假去走访的一趟。
而是孩子用生日会募集的钱，捐建了图书室，而且不止一年这样做，持续地维护着这个
图书室。
走访只是一个去探望的机会。
至于essay
心灵的成长和分享的快乐是不需要写在essay里的
而是用来受益一辈子的
OCEF的图书室项目，据说有不少是家长用孩子的名字命名的
这个故事里的主人公恰好有机会走访
所以贴了出来，给大家图文并茂地讲故事
我个人很佩服她对儿子的品德教育（不少id都反对用生日会募捐，认为剥夺了孩子收礼
物的快乐，而这个孩子是个书迷，愿意选择众乐乐），中文教育还有美术培养。人家当
事人还是很低调的。

IMHO, a good memory would be one factor to influence a writer's writing
style. If the writer can remember what others have written (elegantly) about
a similar subject, his own writing would benefit therefrom. A good memory
also help improve the writer's vocabulary.
Logical thinking also helps. An essay is just one big argument backed by
strong evidence and a natural flow of logics. No argument is bulletproof.

赶紧退学？这个逻辑最大的问题就是以偏概全，要以极少数个例来证明观点。细说起来
问题不少；
1）没有证据表明就是这么一封短的essay导致他的录取，jfk的老爹做inside trading
发了不少财（那个时候不像现在），社会圈子和影响有多大，我们不得而知。

大众RFE葵花宝典完整版。这里大众主要指claim：authorship，contribution，review；其中authorship和review两条过了；contribution和totality没过的。
如果你属于这种情况，好好读完，你一定会有收获。
本人较弱的case：
文章15篇，1作10篇。IF2-5之间。专利pending一个。
引用：104次，独立引用勉强60次。
review：30次，5个杂志。
judge：国家科学日。
推荐信：10封。（全是一般教授，有1个斯坦福，1个奥斯丁，IO可能就知道这几个学校
。）
现在某30位左右学校postdoctoral fellow。
无奖，无funding，无媒体报道。（典型的三无人员）
claim：authroship，judge，contribution。

因为申请州立大学的人数众多，州立大学远没有私立学校那样雄厚的财力去雇用足够的
评审官员，这样导致很多州立大学以硬性指标而不是通过细读每个学生的申请材料来做
录取决定。
安娜堡密西根大学当时实施的是一个150点数的录取评价系统:
80 points — GPA
12 points — SAT scores
10 points — Academic strength of high school
8 points — Strength of high school curriculum
