来自主题: AnthroLing版 - Webster说tycoon的原型来自日语
Webster说tycoon的原型来自日语taikun. 下面这篇文章说它来自中文
当然, 如果考虑到日语最终来自汉语, 也许这么说也没错, 呵呵
另外, 此文说Casino一词来源于福建话的"开始了". Webster的解释是
"Etymology: Italian, from casa house, from Latin, cottage"
Webster对tea的字源解释是 "Etymology: Chinese (Xiamen) dé"
这个和此文作者差不多
但对silk的解释却又不同, "Etymology: Middle English, from Old English
seolc, sioluc, probably ultimately from Greek sērikos silken — more at
sericeous
Date: before 12th century"
其中的不同之处, 大家怎么看?

(Lockheed's memo to lawmakers, dated September 22, a day after the
administration announced an upgrade, said "Taiwan has some of the best-
protected, hardened aircraft shelters in the region, the memo argued. In
addition, the self-ruled island is advancing the 'state-of-the-art in rapid
runway repair technology'")

看了下维基上的历史,貌似差不太多
从高斯开始才有真正的统计,之前是概率论等初步研究
Some scholars pinpoint the origin of statistics to 1663, with the
publication of Natural and Political Observations upon the Bills of
Mortality by John Graunt.[10] Early applications of statistical thinking
revolved around the needs of states to base policy on demographic and
economic data, hence its stat- etymology. The scope of the discipline of
statistics broadened in the early 19th century to include the collection and
analysis of data in general. To... 阅读全帖

来自主题: Military版 - 丹佛枪击案嫌犯是James Holmes
Holmes is an English-language surname with several origins.
The name can be a variant of the surname Holme.[1] This surname has several
etymological origins: it can be derived from a name for someone who lived
next to a holly tree, from the Middle English holm; it can also be derived
from the Old English holm and Old Norse holmr.[2] Another origin of Holmes
is from a placename near Dundonald, or else a place located in the barony of
Inchestuir. The surname is also sometimes an Anglicised form of...

Wallace is a Scottish surname derived from the Anglo-Norman French waleis,
which is in turn derived from a cognate of the Old English wylisc (
pronounced "wullish") meaning "foreigner" or "Welshman" (etymology; see also
Wallach and Walhaz). The original surname may have denoted someone from the
former Kingdom of Strathclyde who spoke Cumbric, a close relative of the
Welsh language, or possibly an incomer from Wales, or the Welsh Marches. The
Kingdom of Strathclyde was originally a part of the He... 阅读全帖

大家的抱怨完全属实,但是不妨碍英语是first and only defacto global language,
