one 2T external hard drive, now formatted in EXT4.
2) Phenomenons:

放些一年也用不上一次的存档
NTFS的话很难挂NAS上用
如果格成EXT4就可以插在NAS上SAMBA访问了
这样是不是更方便些？

comparing ext3 and ext4:
"Supports huge individual file size and overall file system size.
Maximum individual file size can be from 16 GB to 16 TB
Overall maximum ext4 file system size is 1 EB (exabyte). 1 EB = 1024 PB (
petabyte). 1 PB = 1024 TB (terabyte).
Directory can contain a maximum of 64,000 subdirectories (as opposed to 32,
000 in ext3)
You can also mount an existing ext3 fs as ext4 fs (without having to upgrade
it).

If not, how to mount it?
I tried create /mnt/data1, then do mount, fail.

forgot the term...) I don't know if sata hd is causing the problem since it'
s the first time i use sata. Old ATA really works well...
I also had this werid problem when using live fedora 11 to install it,
for / partition, if I format it as ext3, live cd installer requires it to be
ext4, however, if i format it as ext4, it says / can't be installed on ext4
, that the @#@#%^&? |

One to install Windows 7 Enterprise, the other Fedora 14;
while using the third one for file/data sharing.
I understand you can read NTFS from Linux, and read EXT4
from Windows, by some utility, however, they are not
stable and could corrupt the file system by accident.
That's why I do not want to read/write from one OS
to a foreign file system directly.
I hope I express myself clearly so far.

我现在把它分成两个分区，第二个分区搞成ext4,然后把盘上的内容拷到第2分区。
再用ntfs/fat32/ext4 分别试试第1个分区。

另外一个用fsck.ext4建立文件系统，格式化飞快。但用smart的extended offline
self test 测试，发现坏道，而且测试运行到90%就abort了。
看来这个新蛋的包装很成问题
偶的人品也遭受重大考验啊。
最可恶的是我都RMA了第一个，都买了UPS label，现在发现第二个也完蛋，WD都不管，
让我退给newegg，白花了三快钱。人品啊。。。 |

原理就是rsync和ext4 hard link。
关键是你那个“外挂”怎么整。大概有下面几种方案：
一是简单的外置dock或者enclosure，通过USB3.0挂在NAS上，每天定时备份。
不好的地方是这种dumb dock 24/7通电，备份盘一直在转（尽管磁头会park）。
能自动休眠而又能被唤醒的dumb dock我好像没看到过。
第二当然是“聪明”一些、能睡能醒的外挂，比如再买个群晖的expansion unit，
或者甚至另外一个群晖NAS（买个100多刀最便宜的就行了）专门用来做备份。
如果选择后者，就在该备份NAS上启用TimeBackup service（如附图）。
第三你当然可以用其他任何支持rsync和WOL的机器做备份。 |

简化的框图模型去推理文件系统是如何工作的。
例如这个原话：
“page cache是什么？是内存管理的，和文件系统管理有个鸡毛关系”
我可以看出来，依据就是，那个框图里面，page cache 是直接写
到 block device，和左边的文件系统模块没有连线。
这个其实是框图的简化，又很多细节就不是很真实的忽略掉了。
事实上， page cache 写 page 是通过一个 address space op
“.writepage" 的function pointer 写的。这个 writepage
对于 ext4 的文件系统就指向 ext4_writepage().
所以实际上 page cache 是调用 ext4 的函数来写硬盘的。
框图没有画出来。
所以结论就是，框图是不能代替源码来推理软件系统是如何工作的。

raid1中如果有一个硬盘坏了， 或raid1控制器坏了， 那很简单， 把好的硬盘拿出来
， 装到移动硬盘盒里，如果是ext4格式，在windows底下用ext4格式读取器就可以看到
所有文件。 |

据说得好几天才能完. 如果disable lazyinit, mkfs.ext4最多也就20分钟.

系统：suse 11.2 gnome 64
硬盘有五个分区，好像有两个（sdb3,sdb4)是用来装系统的，然后剩下三个(sdb5,6,7)
是我放文件的。如果记得不错，好像sdb5,7是ext3，sdb3,4,6是ext4。
今天用 yast 里面的 partition manager 把sdb7 mount 到/media/storage1, 结果重
启出现问题，说是 sdb7 的
"either the superblock or the partition table is likely to be corrupt!"
需要manual fsck.于是root， umount -a, 然后 manual fsck，运行了大概6步，都
pass，也没有报错。然后 ctrl-D 重新启动，结果还是一样的错误。
用puppy linux usb 系统进入，可以挂载 sdb5 和 sdb7，但是我用的puppy版本不高，
看不到ext4的区。
请大牛指点我该怎么办？能不能不挂载 sdb7 启动？或者怎样可以修复 ... 阅读全帖 |

what I delete is the last one sdc8 used to be "native Ext4"
I do have some trouble when I tried to delete it under open suse,
but as I remember I did it finally and than find it in Windows and format
with NTFS.
