与一些流行说法正好相反，印第安人给“五月花”号的见面礼不是笑脸和食物，而
是诅咒和弓箭。
1620年11月，“五月花”号来到北美大陆的时候，印第安人还处在原始部落时期，
靠捕猎和刀耕火种生活。他们臣服于武力，恐惧于神灵。1616-1619年间的北美瘟疫大
流行之后，新英格兰地区印第安部落人口只剩下原来的三分之一左右。“五月花”号移
民的登陆地就是已经绝灭的原Patuxet亚部落所在地。
早在10年多前，当一些英国人在美洲东岸弗吉尼亚建立村镇的时候，已迁居荷兰的
英国分离派教徒也一直筹划着移民美洲新大陆。1620年8月，他们准备了两艘船，但其
